The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

The Black Mountain Treatment Center for Women provides residential chemical dependency treatment for justiceinvolved women with substancerelated offenses including DWI. Participants are referred by the Parole Commission or community courts as a condition of parole or probation with the requirement that they complete residential treatment prior to returning to their home community.

The programs mission is to support a sustainable lifestyle of recovery by delivering an intensive 28 to 90day residential treatment experience developing individualized continuing recovery plans and offering support for a successful transition back into the community.

Job duties include but are not limited to the following:

Conducting sick calls and assessments
Assisting the physician and carrying out orders
Planning implementing and evaluating nursing care
Responding to medical emergencies
Monitoring for communicable diseases
Counseling for compliance with diet medications and treatment
Responding to inquiries and medical appointments
Ordering medications and supplies
Performing additional nursing care duties as required

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

Management Preferences: In-depth knowledge of professional principles practices and theory of nursing and its application.

  • In-depth knowledge of laws rules and regulations governing the provision of nursing care. Knowledge of unit organization and standard operating procedures. Knowledge of medications and the physiological effect of those medications.
  • Knowledge of good supervisory practices and skill in supervising others including how to deal effectively with difficult employees. Skilled in the application of nursing techniques and instruments. To implement the nursing process (assessments plan implement and evaluate) with limited supervision.
  • Able to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of subordinates shown by leading a team; skill in delegation and making assignments.
  • Able to answer questions from the nursing and medical staff or provide consultation on disease processes treatment care; etc.
  • Knowledge in counseling and given sound advice to staff regarding conduct and job performance and respond to potentially problematic situations.
  • Able to deal effectively with a crisis situation. Evaluate effectiveness of services and monitor customer satisfaction. Communicate information to patients families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner verbally and in writing.
  • Provide instruction to nursing and medical staff on disease processes treatment care etc. regarding patient care.

Employees in this class perform professional nursing work at the full-performance level providing direct patient care to individuals with varied health problems. Employees in this class serve as a lead nurse and typically work independently with other healthcare professionals. Work includes conducting nursing assessments; developing implementing and evaluating treatment plans; and providing patient care and education through case management. There is a greater emphasis in independent practice and advanced clinical knowledge/skills. Employees in this class administer medications and treatments as directed by a physician.

Employees in this class are responsible for appropriate treatment and medical documentation and may assist the nursing supervisor by directly supervising licensed and unlicensed assigned nursing staff. Performs other related work as required.

This position provides professional nursing care and treatment to patients in accordance with medical protocols written

policies and procedures and the NC Board of Nursing scope of practice.
