The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work
Work in this class involves providing intensive social work services in serious and complicated cases which require the flexible use of a wide range of social work skills and intervention techniques. Services are provided in a variety of settings including neuro-medical centers child care facilities Head Start/Early Head Start programs home environments correctional facilities juvenile justice facilities and state institutions. Clients/patients have specialized dementia mental health substance abuse and/or developmental disability issues. Work may involve providing in-depth assessment of individuals and family dynamics and needs assessment intervention and treatment of patients/clients and or families. Work may involve training and modeling to direct care staff or families. Employees work with patients/clients and families to develop treatment plans and discharge plans into the community. The discharge planning involves coordinating with a variety of community based service providers.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

The salary grade for this position isNC11 Salary Range ($45431 - $79504.) State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Western Correctional Center for Women (WCCW):
Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7 2008 and is a minimum custody facility housing approx. 360 female offenders located in Black Mountain NC. WCCW renovated four dormitories: Greenwood Frye Sloop and Gilliat. Renovations on the vocation building provided offenders with an educational classroom and an operating greenhouse. Renovations to the Buchanan building accommodated the increasing offender population and offer more educational classrooms and a medical wing. On Oct. 4 2021 the facilitys name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.
Management Preferences:
Documented knowledge of social work techniques and practices.
Minimum Education and Experience

Masters degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution;
or Bachelors degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience;
or Masters degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience;
or Bachelors degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
