Job Summary

The main responsibilities of the Wingspan Tutoring and Coaching GA are:
  • 70% - Provide support to the Tutoring and Coaching Student Program Coordinator for activities related to coordinating undergraduate peer academic coaching services including the recruiting hiring training supervising and educating of a cohort of 12-15 coaches following the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) principles and standards. Training for peer academic coaches must be delivered in a manner consistent with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) standards for International Peer Educator Training Certification (IPTC) and International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) standards. Training must be coordinated facilitated and evaluated collaboratively with the Student Program Manager for Peer Educator Development.
  • 25% - Assist the Tutoring and Coaching Student Program Coordinator and Tutoring Coordinator with activities related to peer tutoring including recruitment hiring onboarding training supervision and evaluation of peer tutors following the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) principles and standards.
  • 5% - Participate in administrative team meetings and other duties as assigned.

  1. KU graduate student in good academic standing enrolled full time (6 hours or doctoral students enrolled in dissertation hours) in an on-campus or hybrid program (not fully online).
  2. Demonstrated experience in public speaking as evidenced by coursework and/or work experience.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by the interview and application materials.
  4. Strong attention to detail as demonstrated by previous materials and application materials.
  5. Ability to work 20 hours per week.


  1. Previous experience working in an academic support center such as through tutoring writing consulting SI or peer academic coaching.
  2. Strong interest in helping college students succeed as demonstrated in application materials or interview.
  3. Prior experience demonstrating the ability to take initiative and work independently while also collaborating with professional staff as shown in application materials.
  4. Strong computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word Excel Access PowerPoint Teams) Canvas.
  5. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with team members as shown in application materials.


Position Overview
The Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support is a unit in the University Academic Support Centers (UASC) that provides programming to all KU students in the form of Supplemental Instruction (SI) Tutoring Services Peer Academic Coaching Writing Consulting and Workshops. The Wingspan Tutoring and Coaching Graduate Assistant (GA) primarily assists the Tutoring and Coaching Student Program Coordinator and other professional staff in the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support with the coordination of Wingspans peer academic coaching program including the recruiting hiring training supervising and educating of a cohort of 12-15 coaches. Due to the Tutoring and Coaching Student Program Coordinator having some purview over tutoring the Wingspan Tutoring and Coaching GA will also assist with activities related to peer tutoring.

The Wingspans tutoring and writing consulting programs achieved its first ever Level 1 and Level 2 College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) in October 2025. This means that tutors and writing consultants can earn their personal certifications through undergoing intensive training and accruing a certain number of tutoring experience hours. This also means that KU students will benefit from meeting with trained certified tutors and writing consultants.

Limited evening and occasional weekend work may be required but never in conflict with class schedule.

Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
