Job Summary

Job Summary: The Athletic Director provides leadership supervision and coordination for the interscholastic and intramural athletic programs across the districts middle and high schools. The Director is responsible for ensuring that programs align with the districts educational goals and mission promote sportsmanship and comply with all Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regulations.

Performance Responsibilities

Leadership & Program Management

  • In collaboration with building principals and district leadership build and maintain a comprehensive student-centered athletic program aligned to the districts goals and mission.
  • Oversee daily operations of athletic programs to ensure safe effective and efficient practices.
  • Serve as the districts liaison to the MIAA. Ensure all coaches student-athletes and programs adhere to MIAA rules and regulations.
  • Act as the chief spokesperson for the district athletic program with all members of the community.
  • Communicate and collaborate with school staff and parents/caregivers regarding athletic events and student athletes.

Personnel Management

  • Lead the recruitment and selection processes for all coaching staff.
  • Orient supervise and evaluate coaches the Assistant Athletic Director and the Athletic Trainer and support their ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure all coaches possess and maintain required certifications (e.g. CPR/AED Concussion Training and MIAA coaching courses).
  • Develop and maintain a handbook for coaches outlining procedures and expectations.

Logistical Financial & Facilities Oversight

  • Assume responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all athletic events including transportation.
  • With appropriate staff schedule and coordinate the use of facilities equipment gymnasiums and fields for games and practices.
  • Prepare schedules and bids on contracted services (i.e. rink pool ski time police etc.).
  • Oversee the purchase inventory and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms.
  • Develop and manage the annual athletic department budget. Collect and account for athletic user fees and all gate receipts.
  • Submit requisitions and examine and approve bills for payment.
  • Work with the Business Office and HR department regarding payroll processing and reimbursement of officials.
  • When appropriate serve as a consultant for any changes in or additions to the physical plant or facilities used by interscholastic teams.

Student-Centered Program Oversight

  • Ensure student athletes meet MIIA and WPS eligibility requirements including undergoing required physical medical exams.
  • Attend athletic events and ensure students and spectators adhere to the MIAA and WPS codes of conduct.
  • Develop and operationalize appropriate rules and regulations governing conduct at interscholastic athletic activities.
  • Maintain a comprehensive program for all athletes for the prevention care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  • Work with Coaches and the Athletic Trainer to ensure proper injury protocols and emergency action plans are in place and utilized.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Licensure through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) licensure as a Supervisor/Director or Principal/Assistant Principal is preferred.
  • Candidates with at least five (5) years of coaching experience and/or three (3) years of leadership experience are highly preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to supporting a diverse population of students establishing strong relationships with staff and caregivers and ensuring equity in educational opportunities and outcomes.
  • Ability to develop and implement culturally sustaining practices that promote student family and community engagement as well as an inclusive school climate.

Evaluated by: WMS and/or WHS Principal

Work Year: In accordance with the terms of the Wellesley Educators Association Unit B contract. This position works over the course of 12 months and requires work beyond the school day and as necessary on weekends school vacations and during the summer.

Salary/Benefits: In accordance with the terms of the Wellesley Educators Association Unit B contract.
