Job Summary

Summary Statement

This classification is a certified police officerresponsible for supervising other Division police officers statewide. This position will oversee a specializedunit of police officers focusing on illegal shipments of alcoholic beveragesinto the state of Delaware and other enforcement operations. This position assists with assignment andevaluation of work performance by subordinate employees. This position will conduct and provideguidance for complex criminal and civil investigations involving Divisionpolice officers and handle other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Promotes compliance by assisting in inspections and inventories of liquor establishments and answering questions from owners and operators to help them comply.

  • Assists with enforcement of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement laws rules regulations.

  • Assists with criminal investigations and surveillance activities.

  • Makes arrests completes investigative and compliance reports to include crime reports that are submitted to the State Bureau of Identification; reports may be used in court cases; appears as a witness in Court and before the Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement Commission.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Alcohol and Tobacco Police Sergeant
Applicants must have education training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of an active State of Delaware Council on Police Training Certificate or equivalent OR eligibility for recertification per Delaware Administrative Code Title 1 Chapter 801 Section 8.0 Re-activation Requirements of Police Officers.
  2. At least six years experience as a Certified Police Officer.
  3. Three years experience in ensuring compliance with alcohol and tobacco laws rules regulations standards policies and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in planning developing coordinating and implementing in-depth long term investigations.
  5. Coursework training and/or work experience in staff supervision which may include performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others.
  6. Possession of a valid Drivers License (not suspended revoked or cancelled or disqualified from driving).

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicableterms and conditions of employment in accordance with Title 29 Chapter 59 and Title 19 Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.

A satisfactory fingerprint-based background check administered by the Delaware State Police is requried as a Condition of Hire.
