Job Summary
Position Title: Systems Design and Development Engineer 6
Specialization: DevOps and Cloud Modernization Subject Matter Expert
Engagement Type: Part-time consulting engagement with growth to Full Time Equivalent (FTE)
Initial Level of Effort: Approximately 90 hours per month
Position Overview
- The Systems Design and Development Engineer 6 serves as a senior technical architect and DevOps modernization leader responsible for guiding enterprise cloud transformation initiatives across complex application portfolios.
- This role operates at the portfolio and platform architecture level partnering directly with client leadership engineering teams and program stakeholders to design and implement modern cloud-native DevOps-enabled architectures that accelerate application modernization and migration.
- The engineer will assess existing environments develop modernization roadmaps and lead the implementation of standardized multi-cloud architectures CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation frameworks.
- This position combines strategic architecture leadership with hands-on technical execution ensuring that modernization initiatives deliver measurable improvements in security scalability reliability and delivery velocity.
- The engagement will begin at approximately 90 hours per month with the potential to expand into a full-time role as Task Release Notices (TRNs) and program funding are approved.
Key Responsibilities
- Portfolio-Level Cloud Modernization Strategy
- Lead application portfolio assessments to identify modernization opportunities migration pathways and cloud readiness
- Develop enterprise cloud strategies aligned to AWS and Microsoft Azure platforms
- Establish repeatable architecture patterns for cloud-native workloads
- Define modernization roadmaps including rehost replatform refactor and rebuild strategies
- DevOps Pipeline Assessment and Transformation
- Assess existing DevOps pipelines with emphasis on GitLab CI/CD platforms
- Design and implement modern DevOps workflows that support automated build test security scanning and deployment
- Improve release velocity through automated testing continuous integration and continuous delivery practices
- Establish DevSecOps standards and pipeline governance models
- Containerization and Platform Engineering
- Design containerized application architectures using Docker and Kubernetes
- Implement scalable container orchestration strategies across hybrid and cloud environments
- Develop platform engineering capabilities that enable standardized developer environments
- Infrastructure as Code and Automation
- Lead adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks using Terraform
- Implement automated provisioning pipelines for cloud infrastructure
- Design reusable infrastructure modules and automated deployment frameworks
- Align automation practices with enterprise security and compliance requirements
- Enterprise Architecture Development
Develop and deliver architecture artifacts including
- Reference architectures
- Architecture decision records
- Cloud migration strategies
- DevOps platform architectures
- Platform engineering blueprints
- Establish common architecture patterns across application portfolios to reduce technical debt and improve operational consistency
- Client Engagement and Technical Leadership
- Work directly with customer program leadership and engineering teams to guide modernization initiatives
- Translate business and mission requirements into scalable technical architectures
- Provide technical mentorship and engineering guidance across development and operations teams
- Support technical workshops architecture reviews and modernization planning sessions

Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science Engineering Information Systems or related field
- Secret Clearence
- 10 or more years of experience in systems engineering cloud architecture or DevOps engineering
- Demonstrated experience leading enterprise application modernization initiatives
- Proven expertise implementing DevOps pipelines and infrastructure automation
- Strong experience with containerized workloads and Kubernetes platforms
- Experience developing architecture artifacts for enterprise modernization initiatives
- Ability to work directly with client stakeholders and engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications
Cloud certifications such as:
- AWS Solutions Architect
- Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Experience supporting federal government or enterprise IT modernization programs
- Familiarity with Zero Trust architectures and secure cloud deployment models
- Experience implementing enterprise DevSecOps frameworks
