Join Our Team as a Hydrogeological Engineer and Shape the Future of Sustainable Mining and Water management!

Step into a highimpact role where your expertise drives safe innovative and environmentally responsible mine operations. As a Hydrogeological Engineer youll lead the design and execution of cuttingedge groundwater management systems for mine and tailings facilities.

In this role youll blend advanced hydrogeological modeling geotechnical engineering and regulatory strategy to ensure our structures perform reliably from daytoday operations through longterm closure. Youll be at the forefront of developing robust groundwater control designs optimizing operational water management and implementing proactive monitoring programs that safeguard the environment.

What you will do

Site Characterization and Data Collection

The role involves leading comprehensive hydrogeological assessments through detailed field investigations to understand groundwater behavior aquifer properties and hydraulic connectivity across the site. You will design and implement groundwater monitoring networks including the installation and management of piezometers observation wells and related instrumentation to track groundwater levels and water chemistry. Using the collected data you will analyze and interpret hydrogeological geotechnical and geochemical information to support site models and inform engineering decisions.

Groundwater Modeling

You will develop and evaluate numerical groundwater flow models to predict groundwater movement rates groundwater fluxes and flow pathways under a range of conditions. A key responsibility includes translating field observations and site characterization results into clear and defensible conceptual site models (CSMs). You will assess groundwaterrelated risks and uncertainties while also running scenario analyses to evaluate design alternatives operational strategies and longterm control measures that optimize groundwater management.

Regulatory Compliance and Environmental Protection

You will ensure that all groundwater control strategies and engineered designs align with applicable local national and international regulations and industry standards. This includes evaluating potential environmental impacts related to seepage such as risks to groundwater quality and surrounding ecosystems and integrating protective measures into project designs to maintain compliance and support responsible resource development.

Monitoring and Adaptive Management

The role includes developing and implementing longterm groundwater monitoring programs to track system performance over the life of the asset. You will analyze monitoring data identify deviations from expected behavior and recommend timely corrective actions when groundwater conditions exceed design thresholds. This adaptive approach ensures continuous improvement and reliable performance of groundwater management systems.

Operations Maintenance & Surveillance (OMS)

You will play a key role in supporting the development and execution of OMS plans for groundwater management infrastructure. Responsibilities include ensuring continuous surveillance of system integrity tracking groundwater trends and identifying potential issues early. Based on surveillance results you will recommend operational adjustments maintenance actions or system upgrades to sustain longterm reliability and compliance.

Collaboration with a MultiDisciplinary Team

Work seamlessly with a diverse team of geoscientists geotechnical engineers tailings specialists environmental professionals and operational staff to solve complex hydrogeological challenges. Drive alignment across disciplines by clearly communicating hydrogeological insights influencing design decisions and integrating technical inputs into cohesive highperformance solutions. Champion collaborative problemsolving to ensure that groundwater management strategies support safe operations longterm asset performance and responsible environmental stewardship.

About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Hydrogeology Geotechnical Engineering Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (.) designation or eligibility with APEGA is required.
  • 8 years of experience in physical/contamination hydrogeology water management geological engineering or similar field
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles and regulatory guidelines.
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving communication and coordination skills.
  • Highly motivated individual with ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Knowledgeable in hydrogeological modeling software
  • Knowledgeable of the Quaternary geology and the McMurray formation considered and asset.

Location:Calgary AB or Edmonton AB

As part of Imperials longterm business strategy certain Calgarybased roles are expected to transition to Edmonton in or around 2028.
