Job Description

Assistant Principal

Title: Assistant Principal

Qualifications: A minimum of AA in School Administration

Reports to: Superintendent of Education and/or the Superintendents designee and the School Principal.

Job Goal: To provide leadership and supervision through administrative skills so as to promote the educational development of each student.

Mission and Goals

  • Works with the Superintendent principal and those whom he/she supervises to articulate and promote the school systems vision of learning and teaching
  • Monitors and evaluates progress toward accomplishment of system goals and objectives
  • Uses student data to identify program needs
  • Develops goals and objectives programs and operations that are consistent with school system vision mission and goals
  • Ensures that unit and program plans are consistent with the systems strategic plan
  • Organizes daily monthly and yearly schedules to facilitate learning and teaching in the schools
  • Communicates high expectations of students staff and parents/guardians
  • Creates identities encourages and supports innovative ideas that in turn support learning and teaching in the schools

Assessment & Student Performance:

  • Emphasizes and relates the importance of the Mississippi Assessment System to students faculty/staff parents and the community (Instructional Curriculum Assessment Log Newsletters PTO faculty meetings professional development announcements etc.)
  • Shows evidence of student growth based on the Mississippi Curriculum Tests and Subject Area testing program over a two year period
  • Makes changes in the curricular and instructional program based upon evaluation of student achievement data (Subject Area testing Mississippi Curriculum Test Work Keys)
  • Establishes an effective plan for continuous improvement on the Mississippi Assessment System and revises the plan as needed by the end of each April (Mississippi Curriculum Tests Subject Area tests Instructional Curriculum Assessment Log School Renewal Strategic Plans Title I School Wide Plan etc.)
  • Establishes a plan for intervention based upon an evaluation of program needs (Promotion/Retention Rates Progress Reports Report Cards Child Find Dropout Rate Subject Area tests Mississippi Curriculum Tests)
  • Assists the principal in monitoring daily classroom assessments (Instructional Curriculum Assessment Log review of teacher made tests)

Instructional Staff:

  • Establishes an on-going evaluation plan for monitoring classroom instruction (Instructional Curriculum Assessment Log Classroom observations evaluations lesson plans etc.)
  • Leads and facilitates the instructional staff in ongoing and continuous analysis and planning for curriculum and instructional improvement (Professional Development Grade-level/Subject Area meetings Student/Teacher Support teams etc.)
  • Selects effective staff to meet identified needs of the instructional program

Accreditation Standards

  • Communicates and follows established procedures in the Mississippi Public School Accountability Standards and other applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Formulates improvement plans based on most recent results of the Mississippi Accreditation Model
  • Demonstrates evidence of school improvement on the Accreditation and Growth components of the Mississippi Accreditation Model
  • Formulates plans for improvement based on established standards for growth under Every Student Succeeds Act
  • Demonstrates evidence of school improvement on the growth standards set forth in Every Student Succeeds Act

Student Discipline

  • Maintains accurate and organized records for student discipline (Student files discipline reports actions parent conferences IEP meetings etc)
  • Follows district policies when administering student discipline (Corporal punishment suspensions expulsions etc.)
  • Insures that disciplinary actions are administered according to established policies
  • Develops a plan for insuring faculty and staff maintain appropriate and timely communication with parents concerning disciplinary referrals and actions (Parent conferences telephone calls etc.)
  • Monitors the discipline program at the school and maintains timely and appropriate communication between teachers and the administration (Classroom discipline follow-up procedures etc.)

Supervision

  • Has an established school wide security plan (Fire bus MHSAA daily routines extra-curricular etc.)
  • Establishes and monitors a plan for the supervision of students at all times (Buses recess halls extracurricular MHSAA clubs etc.)
  • Monitors and evaluates classified personnel and programs (Food Service maintenance bus drivers etc.)
  • Administers and supervises extra-curricular activities

Communication

  • Uses appropriate grammar and syntax - verbal and written
  • Communicates pertinent information from meetings conferences and other sources in a timely and accurate manner (Administrators meetings professional development opportunities memos etc.)
  • Provides a written organized monthly calendar for communicating with Superintendents office faculty and staff
  • Demonstrates courtesy and impartiality in relationships with faculty staff and other associates
  • Provides an opportunity for faculty and staff input and incorporates their recommendations into the decision making process where appropriate (School Renewal Strategic Plans EEF Textbooks etc.)
  • Communicates school and organizational goals periodically throughout the school year (PTO newsletters etc.)
  • Listens effectively to the ideas grievances and complaints of parents and makes a reasonable effort to resolve such issues
  • Informs the community of school and organizational goals throughout the school year (Civic dubs booster clubs newsletters etc.)

General

  • Studies and follows district policies applicable to the operation of a school as established by the Board of Education
  • Follows any further rules or requirements as set forth by the Superintendent of Education
  • Performs any other tasks as required by the Superintendent of Education and/or the designee of the Superintendent and the school principal.

Terms of Employment Ten eleven or twelve month year. Salary and work year will be established by the Board of Education.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
