Job Goal(s):
The primary goal of the Teacher for the Severely Multiply Impaired is to ensure that there areindividualized instructional programs for each student in the designated group. This personspecifies the method of instruction materials and classroom procedures to be followed.Implementation of appropriate recordkeeping and input on program effectiveness are also theresponsibility of the classroom teacher. This person is to work in conjunction with the supportstaff to ensure that the individualized programming needs of the assigned students are beingmet in all identified areas to ensure maximum educational gain.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelors degree in education required
Certification:
Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education required
Work Experience:
Previous experience working with severely mentally impaired program is preferred
Skills:
- Possess appropriate instructional and behavior management skills
- Possess knowledge and ability needed to plan and implement:
-Instruction in daily living skills and vocational skills
-Adapted instruction in functional academics
-Integration of technology (including alternative and augmentativecommunication) with daily instruction
-Class-wide and individualized positive behavior support
- Ability to collaborate with other school staff to achieve maximum benefit for all students
- Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders in order to provide the best programs and services for students with severe multiple impairments
- Ability to learn and perform various medical and health-related activities/treatments/therapies for students with severe multiple impairments (under direction of the school nurse or appropriate ancillary therapist)
Essential Job Functions:
- Participate in and lead the development of Individual Education Plans for students.
- Ensure implementation of each students Individual Education Plan.
- Demonstrate effective instructional practices.
- Demonstrate effective behavior management at the school-wide class-wide and individual student levels.
- Demonstrate effective leadership and direction to classroom assistants.
- Follow through on implementation of curriculum activities required by the principal.
- Monitor and document student progress and provide evidence of student growth by effectively collecting recording and reporting student data reflecting progress on IEP goals behavior plans and the greater school curriculum.
- Select and maintain research-based instructional programs materials and supplies for the classroom.
- Effectively plan and organize for daily instruction.
- Maintain accurate student records related to attendance lunch count discipline provision of health care and other required documentation.
- Act as case manager for assigned students coordinating programs and services for each student.
- Research and assist families in accessing available community resources and agencies to the benefit of each students current and anticipated needs.
- Continually seek out opportunities to work with other staff and classrooms to provide a variety of learning opportunities for students.
- Participate in the professional learning community and continually strive to increase knowledge of the curriculum materials and strategies in education of students with severe multiple impairments and maintain.
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon or established timelines.
- Adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Director of Special Education.
- Regular and reliable in person attendance.
- Work additional days for summer work.
- Valid drivers license required.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
