Position Summary
Bow Valley College is seeking a skilled and motivated Cybersecurity Analyst to join its Information Technology Services (ITS) team. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer the Cybersecurity Analyst is responsible for the operation application investigation and enforcement of cybersecurity systems and policies across the College. This role supports the security of the institutions technical environment by monitoring systems investigating potential threats and implementing and maintaining cybersecurity infrastructure. The Cybersecurity Analyst also coordinates technical security activities responds to incidents and provides regular reporting on security operations and service levels to management.
A significant portion of the role focuses on Cybersecurity Operations Centre (CSOC) analysis. The Cybersecurity Analyst monitors network traffic patterns to identify potential malicious activity and investigates security breaches in accordance with established procedures. The role includes reviewing user access rights and privileges conducting threat hunting activities under the direction of the Chief Information Security Officer and preparing reports on cybersecurity activities and incidents. The Analyst operates and helps maintain a range of security technologies including data loss prevention tools firewall systems endpoint protection platforms intrusion detection and prevention systems and cloud security infrastructure. The role also provides tertiary support for the Colleges identity and access management services and remains current on emerging threats technologies and evolving cloud security practices.
The Cybersecurity Analyst plays an important role in improving and maintaining the Colleges security architecture. This includes supporting the design and long-term planning of secure technical infrastructure maintaining security architecture patterns for consistency and implementing security infrastructure throughout its lifecycle. The Analyst actively participates in institutional technology initiatives and projects that align with the Colleges cybersecurity and cloud computing strategies and serves as a technical escalation point for concerns related to the Colleges security architecture.
Another key responsibility involves contributing to risk assessments and security audits. The Cybersecurity Analyst participates in information risk assessment activities by identifying threats and vulnerabilities within the Colleges systems and networks. The role conducts vulnerability scans reviews application and operating system access controls coordinates penetration testing activities and evaluates physical security controls. The Analyst administers security assessments for systems containing institutional data to ensure compliance with established standards and to maintain a strong security posture.
The position also contributes to strengthening the Colleges cybersecurity awareness and threat intelligence capabilities. This includes analyzing emerging threat intelligence supporting security awareness initiatives and providing recommendations for training campaigns and educational resources. The Cybersecurity Analyst collaborates with the broader post-secondary education community to share insights and guidance related to emerging security threats and best practices.
Within the area of vulnerability management and penetration testing the Cybersecurity Analyst leads and conducts periodic vulnerability assessments and penetration tests across the Colleges infrastructure.
Working in collaboration with the Chief Information Security Officer and the Associate Director IT Infrastructure the Analyst helps coordinate necessary configuration changes to improve system security. The role also supports periodic application penetration testing in partnership with development teams to ensure that both infrastructure and applications remain secure and compliant with institutional standards.
The Cybersecurity Analyst also contributes to the development and implementation of security automation and orchestration processes. This includes designing installing configuring testing and maintaining automated security workflows that improve efficiency and response times. The Analyst monitors the output of automation tasks applies best practices in security orchestration and ensures that cybersecurity services maintain optimal performance. The role may also provide consultation to project teams and deliver training to other IT staff on cybersecurity tools and processes.
As a member of IT project teams the Cybersecurity Analyst collaborates with technical and non-technical stakeholders to support the successful delivery of technology initiatives. The role participates in gathering technical requirements provides cybersecurity expertise to project teams and ensures alignment with the ITS project methodology and timelines.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a diploma in Computer Science or a related field and a minimum of two years of cybersecurity-related experience or five years of experience in software development technical support or systems administration. Experience working in an intermediate technical role managing Microsoft services and web systems is required. Strong knowledge of application and web security practices system and network design SSL DNS and TCP/IP networking is essential. Experience with firewall configuration and operation is also required.
Candidates should also have intermediate experience in areas such as penetration testing vulnerability management development methodologies and secure coding practices security automation andintegrations or security orchestration platforms digital forensics and incident response (DFIR) red team/blue team activities and risk assessments.
The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills strong interpersonal abilities and the capacity to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential along with the ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving cybersecurity environment. An equivalent combination of related education and experience may also be considered.
