Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) Labor and Delivery provides comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients throughout labor delivery postpartum recovery and newborn care in the Family Birthplace Unit. This role involves monitoring maternal and fetal conditions assisting physicians during deliveries and surgical procedures and ensuring safe care for both mother and newborn.
The RN works in a Baby-Friendly facility and is cross-trained across multiple obstetric functions including labor and delivery circulator duties in surgical procedures acute care nursery and OB triage. The nurse also assists with gynecological surgery patients and performs newborn hearing screenings while delivering patient-centered care in a collaborative clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Maternal and Fetal Care
Assess monitor and manage maternal and fetal conditions during labor and delivery.
Provide continuous fetal monitoring and evaluate fetal heart rate patterns.
Manage labor progression and provide clinical interventions as necessary.
Administer medications and treatments as ordered including induction agents and magnesium therapy.
Provide education and emotional support to patients and families throughout the childbirth process.
Labor and Delivery Procedures
Assist physicians and certified nurse midwives during vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections.
Perform circulator responsibilities during surgical obstetric procedures.
Monitor patients undergoing cytotec inductions and magnesium therapy.
Manage complications during labor and delivery and respond appropriately to emergencies.
Postpartum and Newborn Care
Provide postpartum care for mothers and newborns.
Perform newborn hearing screenings and monitor newborn health status.
Deliver couplet care (mother and baby) including feeding support and newborn assessments.
Care for infants admitted to the sick nursery when required.
Support lactation and promote breastfeeding practices in alignment with Baby-Friendly standards.
Nursery and OB Triage Responsibilities
Provide care in the acute care nursery for newborns requiring additional monitoring.
Perform triage assessments for obstetric patients presenting with pregnancy-related concerns.
Assist in evaluation and stabilization of patients requiring immediate obstetric care.
Documentation and Collaboration
Document patient care accurately in the Epic electronic medical record system.
Collaborate with physicians midwives pediatric teams and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
Communicate effectively during shift handoffs to ensure continuity of care.
