Job Summary

Overview

The Lab Technician position supports instruction performed in the veterinary anatomy lab such as:

  • Prepare maintain and coordinate anatomical specimens.
  • Clean organize and maintain the veterinary anatomy lab teaching space and specimen preparation space.
  • Provide digital images of prepared specimens for educational purposes.
  • Assist/participate (to the level skills allow) in teaching anatomy to veterinary students.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare prosections and coordinate with the course schedule to have them available during scheduled lab times. (20%)
  • Coordinate with current staff and faculty members to maintain current inventory of preserved fresh and skeletal anatomical specimens.
  • Develop and implement a strategy to increase the number of specimens to account for the eventual increase in the number of students admitted into our program. (15%)
    • Learn and eventually teach methods to build skeletal specimens.
    • Maintain the dermestid beetle colonies.
    • Process bones using the beetles maceration chemical degreasing and whitening agents.
  • Embalm canines equines bovines caprines and ovines and possibly other species as needed for student and instructional staff dissections and learning opportunities. (10%)
  • Monitor inventory of supplies including in the first aid and chemical cabinets and advise Scott when its necessary to replenish the supplies. (1%)
  • Responsible for cleaning and organizing the anatomy lab prep area coolers and freezers. (10%)
    • Sweep and mop floors.
    • Dust all surfaces.
    • Clean stains and fluids from all surfaces.
    • Ensure mop buckets are clean and contain fresh water Simple Green for use by the students.
    • Refill Simple Green soap and wetting solution containers.
  • Wash and dry laundry (towels lab coats scrub tops) fold towels and put away into cupboards. Ensure plenty of towels are available for student use by the start of each lab section. (5%)
  • Clean tables and empty waste fluid buckets as needed. Remove grates on tables and clean the interior to prevent odors from accumulating. (5%)
  • Coordinate with the director of the willed-body program to procure fresh specimens to be embalmed and used for the creation of a variety of structure and skeletal specimens. (2%)
  • Clean dissection instruments and reassemble them into dissection kits. (5%)
  • Perform maintenance on skeletal specimens and equipment used in the anatomy lab and in prep areas. (5%)
  • Ensure waste tissue is placed into incinerator bags and take those bags to the UVDL for disposal. (5%)
  • Attend anatomy team meetings. (1%)

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position will be hired at one of two possible levels:
    • For Lab Technician I: 6 months experience
    • For Lab Technician II: 2 years experience or or an associate degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in biology animal science or a related field.
  • Experience working in an anatomy or research laboratory

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate records.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of academic and vocational curricula.
  • Program planning and implementation skills.
