Job Summary
Full-Time and Permanent; Non-Exempt; 6.5 Hours/Day; 182 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year; Grade GG
Provides assistance to a special education classroom teacher by supporting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in general or special education settings. Assists with classroom programs including self-help behavior management and instructional activities.
Education and Experience

Completion of at least sixty (60) college credit hours from an accredited college or university or a score of 455 on the Department of Education Para-Pro exam.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children including experience with special education students in a classroom setting.

At least two (2) years of relevant experience preferred.

Associate degree preferred.

Citizenship residency or valid work authorization required.
Essential Job Functions
-
Provide instructional support to teachers in managing and instructing special education students.
-
Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development group interaction health safety and first aid practices.
-
Work with individuals and small groups to develop fine and gross motor skills.
-
Perform instructional and clerical tasks to assist with daily classroom activities.
-
Support learning tasks such as explaining lessons prompting participation monitoring tests and assisting with instructional activities.
-
Work across various educational settings including pre-kindergarten kindergarten general education classrooms special education classrooms and computer labs.
-
Assist students with varying levels of mental and physical disabilities.
-
Provide support in alternative learning classes as needed.
-
Operate office and audio-visual equipment.
-
Assist in therapeutic crisis intervention and accelerated learning program monitoring and recordkeeping.
-
Escort students to the library playground lunchroom resource classes restrooms and field trips.
-
Assist students with physical and sanitation needs; may work one-on-one or with small groups.

Monitor students in the absence of the teacher.

Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment including managing disruptive behavior when necessary.

Perform physical duties including continuous standing walking lifting (up to 50 pounds) and physical restraint when required.

Demonstrate sensitivity to the impact of physical and mental disabilities on student behavior.

Communicate effectively with parents teachers and administrators.

Work under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher and administrative personnel.

Perform additional duties as assigned.
