Job Summary
The Assistant Conservator is responsible for the examination documentation and treatment of significant textile artworks including historic Savonnerie carpets within a gallery setting. This role supports conservation efforts for a major exhibition and ongoing collection care initiatives. The position requires adherence to professional conservation standards while performing treatment work in a public-facing environment.
This is a term-limited position with a duration of one year from the date of hire.
Primary Responsibilities

Perform conservation treatment of designated carpets in accordance with established ethical and professional standards

Conduct examination condition reporting and detailed documentation using appropriate conservation equipment and imaging tools

Carry out treatment work in a public gallery space during open hours while adhering to institutional protocols

Collaborate closely with the supervising textile conservator regarding treatment plans installation preparation and storage needs
-
Participate in exhibition installation alongside conservators technicians and art handlers
-
Perform preventive conservation measures including routine vacuuming and monitoring
-
Safely handle roll unroll and reposition large textile works as part of treatment and installation
-
Maintain conservation tools supplies and workspace to ensure safe and effective operations
-
Perform additional related duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications
Education:
Masters degree from a recognized Textile Conservation program
Experience:
Skills & Abilities:

Strong manual dexterity and hand skills required for detailed conservation treatments
-
Excellent examination and analytical skills with knowledge of conservation methodologies
-
Basic photography skills and proficiency with imaging software for documentation
-
Strong written verbal and interpersonal communication skills
-
Physical ability to kneel bend lift and perform treatment work on the floor

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment

Ability to give and receive constructive feedback professionally
