The Position: Search & Evaluation Lead in China for Research Technologies Partnering

The Opportunity:

The Corporate Business Development (CBD) organization supports the Roche Group with a wide range of global partnerships including those for R&D with opportunities at all stages (discovery to Ph 3) technology platform tools and commercial deals. Those partnerships start with the identification of the right opportunities that fit our strategy. For discovery partnerships for which Research Technologies Partnering is accountable the identification of highly differentiated modality or technology platforms are key based on an understanding why they push the frontier of science to help create novel medicines otherwise not possible.

The identification of novel opportunities is spearheaded by our Search & Evaluation experts within CBD. For Research Technologies Partnering covering novel technology and modality platforms these are predominantly our 3 research organizations pRED gRED and CICoR and for specific needs like drug delivery also our global technical development organization.

As Search & Evaluation Lead in China you are working with the global Research Technologies Partnering team and specifically the Search & Evaluation Lead based in Basel as well as stakeholders to source and identify opportunities in China across a broad range of modalities and to enable their timely evaluation. You report to the Global Head of Research Technologies Partnering.

More specifically the expectations for this role are:

Be knowledgeable across a broad range of modalities or be able to learn about modality areas quickly

Be able to differentiate what is cutting-edge science developed by a given biotech

Be or become a student of the Chinese ecosystem and the pace of innovation across modalities as well as geographic hotspots in China for platform innovation including the IIT network enabling fast iterations on modality platforms

Become a Go-to person for biotechs in China working on innovative platforms

Collaborate with Search & Evaluation Leads for the Therapy Area asset partnering teams and the Asia Partnering team when interacting with Chinese biotechs offering both pipeline assets and platform capabilities

Exchange with the Head of the Roche Accelerator in Shanghai to stay abreast of platform opportunities and advancements

Responsibilities:

Understand internal modality capabilities and adress identified innovation gaps through sourcing of platform opportunities

As applicable perform comprehensive landscaping on technology platform topics in the Chinese ecosystem --> Contribute to decision-making following the completion of defined modality landscapes

Contribute to the non-confidential and initial confidential review of defined opportunities as applicable

Triage efficiently any opportunistic inquiries from Chinese biotechs

Identify a mechanism for regular check-ins on platform developments with prioritized biotechs given the speed of development in China

Contribute to deep connections with VC firms in China to be at the forefront of novel biotechs being generated

Attend and prepare for scientific and partnering conferences in China including academic scientific symposia and provide synopsis from such conferences

Develop relationships with key academic researchers/universities to understand the forefront of science in Chinas academic setting

Present ecosystem analysis or specific opportunities to the Research Technologies Team and to stakeholders

Document opportunities in CBDs DASH database

Who you are:

We are hiring a Search & Evaluation Lead for Research Technologies Partnering in China. The exact level will be determined based on candidates skills and experience related to the role or other skills sets needed for the position.

7 years in pharma/biotech; experience in Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) / Corporate Development or VC environment preferred

Scientific background - advanced degree in life sciences or medicine or data science (e.g. MD PhD PharmD)

Demonstrated understanding of drug discovery and development

Skills & Characteristics

Strong scientific acumen self-motivation and a genuine interest in following novel science and emerging innovation trends

Energetic results-driven individual with a strong executive presence and collaborative mindset.

Great english oral and written communication fluent in Chinese and Mandarin.

Skillful presenter of scientific information
