Job Summary

LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE - ANTICIPATED TIMEFRAME: MARCH 2 2026 - JUNE 17 2026TITLE: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) 1:1SUMMARY: Working under the general direction of the School Nurse and Director of Student Services the LPN provides health care to an assigned student who has been identified with specialized health care concerns and complex medical needs; dispenses medication; implements specialized health care protocols; responds to medical emergencies; treats accidents and illnesses; serves as a member of a management team to address the academic social psychological and medical needs of student; and maintains health DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides specialized health care and educational services for assigned student including documenting all accidents/illnesses and completing accident reports according to District procedures. Administers daily medications and prescriptions in accordance to District procedures and under the supervision of the School Nurse as directed by a physician and with the parental consent. Maintains accurate records of medications given. Implements specialized health care protocols (e.g. oxygen therapies tracheotomy suctioning ostomy care urethral catheterization nasal/oral gastric tube feeding SVN treatments blood sugar monitoring etc.) as ordered by a physician. Notifies advises and updates parents regarding health care issues and medical problems involving student. Consults with School Nurse on matters related to emergency situations or other medically sensitive the team in management team meetings by portraying an accurate picture of health and safety issues providing student health information which may directly affect student performance and recommending intervention with academic social or psychological needs. Attends IEP team meetings and follows specialized health care plans. Remains current on health issues and changes in laws governing healthcare. Maintains certification and reviews literature on new health issues. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. This includes attending meetings as coordinated by the Director of Student Services. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and ExperienceValid Licensed Practical Nurse license in Massachusetts Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification Frist Aid certificationKnowledge Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of health and safety laws and regulations; awareness of childhood development including developmental needs related to children with specialized health care concerns; understanding health and safety issues concerning pediatrics; utilizing community referral services and agencies; applying screening techniques; treating injuries and illnesses within scope of training; administering specialized health care within a school setting; employing appropriate transfer and positioning procedures in moving medically fragile students; administering medications; maintaining paperwork and supplies in an organized manner; using computer software related programs; engaging and encouraging communication skills while interacting with supervisors staff students and parents to exchange DEMANDS:The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
