Job Description
The Heersink School of Medicine Department of Surgery is currently recruiting faculty candidates to be considered for an open-rank non-tenure or tenure track faculty appointment in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery as a Minimally Invasive surgeon . The successful candidate will be a fellowship trained minimally invasive surgeon with an additional clinical interest in bariatric surgery . The successful candidate will be expected to meet clinical research and teaching needs in the Department of Surgery with an anticipated split of 80% clinical practice focused on bariatric/ MIS surgery and the rest on administrative education and research roles. Our faculty members are nationally-recognized experts in the field of gastrointestinal surgery. We are home to one of the highest-volume academic robotics programs in the country and our bariatric surgery program is one of only 10 programs in Alabama accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The Division performs high-impact research in both clinical and basic sciences including investigations into the impact of metabolic surgery on anxiety and drug addiction. Our research is federally-funded including from the NIH with a track-record of active K-awards R-awards and U-awards. The Division also houses a highly sought after minimally invasive surgery addition to our focus on patient care we provide an environment that supports the education of health professionals and encourages advanced research to further medical science. The University of Alabama at Birmingham one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System is the only four-year public university in the states largest metropolitan area.
