Food Service Lead Job Description

Summary

The Food Service Lead is responsible to oversee the management and food preparation in the school cafeteria under the direction of the school principal and South Shore School Food Project. The Food Service Lead is responsible for financial reporting invoicing menu planning and distribution food preparation marketing communication service ordering and receiving safety and staff scheduling.

The successful FS Lead performs optimally in a dynamic high-pressure fast paced environment. The FS Lead shows initiative while working and is willing to work within the mission and values of the South Shore School Food Project. They will have the ability to use sound judgement have problem-solving skills and a solution-based attitude. The FS Lead will have daily interactions with children of various backgrounds. They will be friendly positive and maintain confidentiality. The FS Lead will be committed to promoting healthy eating food equity and local minimally processed foods in the school cafeteria. They will have regular attendance in current and previous positions.

Food Service Lead Responsibilities

  1. Management of food preparation and food service for the school community.
  2. Financial management of the school cafeteria including daily financial reporting.
  3. Ensure food safety standards are followed at all times by self and all staff.
  4. Serve customers in fast efficient and friendly manner.
  5. Schedule staff.
  6. Ordering and invoicing.
  7. Build healthy menus and snacks based on the School Food and Nutrition Policy using the menus and recipes provided by the School Food Project.
  8. Adhere to procurement guidelines identified by the School Food Project when acquiring good and services to ensure the most cost effective results.
  9. Promote cafeteria and menu items to staff students and parents.
  10. As required: Food preparation and service cashiering taking orders and kitchen duties such as dishes cleaning garbage removal.
  11. Co-ordinate catering as required.
  12. Ensure a positive professional work environment. Promote and maintain good working relationships and communication within the school the Principal school staff students parents and the School Food Project in a cooperative manner and a clear exchange of information.
  13. Manage day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies.
  14. Continually evaluate work processes and use opportunities to improve the quality of service and efficient utilization of resources.
  15. Provide guidance and training to FSW.
  16. Implement the School Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools in all aspects of the food service.

Food Service Lead Requirements

  • High School Diploma GED or suitable equivalent.
  • Culinary course or food service management preferred.
  • 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completion of food safety training program.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Excellent people skills in particular be interpersonally responsive to the diverse backgrounds and personalities of students of various ages while in a busy fast paced environment.
  • Familiar with using computers for ordering emails and shared drives.
  • Proficient understanding of food allergies.
  • Physical capabilities to perform duties of the position including heavy lifting walking and standing during most of the day and working in an environment with heat fluctuations. May require lifting of up to 50 lb.
  • Available to work extended hours.
