Job Summary

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West Great South Upper Wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including GP Clinics Primary Health Care Counselling community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

SWAMS is seeking a passionate and dedicated Counsellor to join our multidisciplinary Mental Health and Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) team. This role plays a vital part in supporting the social emotional and mental wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across the South West region.

About the Role

As a Counsellor at SWAMS you will deliver traumainformed counselling and wellbeing support to clients presenting with a range of concerns including mental health issues AOD use suicide ideation and other social and emotional wellbeing needs.

  • Provide traumainformed counselling and complete all associated case management requirements including assessments treatment plans risk assessments and case notes.
  • Work collaboratively with internal multidisciplinary teams and external agencies including completing referrals when required.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality professional integrity and adherence to SWAMS policies procedures and ethical standards.
  • Participate in reporting and data collection requirements including contributing to meetings working groups and program development.
  • Support continuous quality improvement by ensuring service delivery aligns with evidencebased best practice.
  • Promote the Mental Health and AOD programs internally and externally and assist with group presentations when needed.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development maintain a safe working environment and undertake reasonable additional duties as directed.

Essential Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification in Counselling Social Work Psychology or related field.
  • Welldeveloped counselling skills.
  • Understanding of the historical context of Aboriginal people.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal teams and external agencies.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of past removal policies and intergenerational trauma.
  • Demonstrated riskmanagement abilities.
  • Strong timemanagement skills to handle a counselling caseload.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationshipbuilding skills within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the team and community.
