POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides leadership and support at the district and school level for the secondary Language Arts curriculum in the areas of curriculum development professional development and identification of best practices. Evaluates the effectiveness of middle school Language Arts programs and develops strategies for improvement. Ensures that instruction is aligned with curriculum goals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal regulations and school laws and policies related to secondary education;
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of current principles practices trends and issues in Language Arts pedagogy;
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office specifically Word Excel and PowerPoint; Google Apps;
- Demonstrated leadership and team building skills;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information collaborative efforts and feedback;
- Ability to analyze data to support instruction;
- Ability to meet deadlines;
- Ability to assess program needs and plan short and long-range programs for Language Arts at the middle grades level;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff students parents external agencies and the public.
EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in English English Language Arts English Language Arts Education or Reading;
- Five years of demonstrated successful Language Arts teaching experience at the middle school level;
- Experience in planning and delivering professional development to adult learners.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educators License in Language Arts (Grades 6-9);
- Hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educators License for School Administrator- Principal or Curriculum Instructional Specialist;
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operators license according to the State of NC requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of North Carolina standards for secondary Language Arts;
- Experience with current curriculum and developing and supplementing the written curriculum.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans organizes conducts and evaluates curriculum development and revision as it relates to secondary Language Arts.
- Plans organizes and implements professional development activities in relation to the Language Arts curriculum for secondary education.
- Provides direction designed to promote continued growth and increased effectiveness among school personnel while adhering to local state and federal school laws policies and regulations.
- Develops long and short-range goals and objectives for the improvement to secondary Language Arts instruction and evaluates program goals to determine effectiveness.
- Reviews educational research related to improving student achievement and promotes instructional reform towards best practices for Language Arts.
- Collaborates with school personnel interdepartmental representatives and community groups regarding program initiatives implementation and evaluation.
- Evaluates and participates in the selection of instructional resources and materials for middle school Language Arts.
- Attends workshops training sessions and conferences in an effort to stay abreast of curriculum and instructional changes relating to middle grades education specifically the Language Arts curriculum; shares information with school system staff and the community regarding secondary Language Arts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position operates in a professional office and public school environments and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers scanners and copiers. The position at times must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff students parents staff members of external funding agencies vendors and the community. Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment. Travel is required to schools central service offices and other locations both in and outside of Wake County.
