About the role

Tenure: Remunerated committee appointment (three-year term)

Location: Remote open to applicants in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand

The RANZCP Section of Youth Mental Health is seeking a Community Member with lived or living experience as someone who has engaged in psychiatric services or as a carer or supporter of a young person who has engaged in psychiatric services.

The Section promotes the highest standards in clinical practice training and research in youth mental health. Youth mental health focuses on the needs of young people aged 1225 years and is often delivered through a collaborative consortium model of care.

The Section aims to:

  • promote the objectives of the College relating to youth mental health
  • advise on training in youth mental health
  • advance and share research in youth mental health
  • contribute to and promote the highest standards of clinical practice

The Community Member will contribute their lived expertise from a consumer and/or carer perspective to inform the Sections work and discussions. Community Members are not expected to represent all consumers or carers; rather they are invited to share their own lived expertise in support of the Sections activities.

Community Members are full members of the Section and their perspectives are valued as part of discussions and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively contribute to scheduled meetings
  • Review meeting papers and provide input between meetings as required
  • Contribute to discussions that inform Section activities priorities and advice
  • Work collaboratively with committee members the Chair and RANZCP staff
  • Adhere to RANZCP policies including confidentiality and conflict-of-interest requirements

  • Lived or living experience as someone who has engaged in psychiatric services or as a carer or supporter of a young person who has engaged in psychiatric services
  • An interest in contributing to improvements in psychiatry training policy and practice
  • Ability to reflect on and communicate lived-experience insights in a way that supports professional discussions
  • Availability to attend approximately four meetings per year (3 virtual meetings usually 12 hours; and 1 face-to-face/ hybrid meeting usually 3-6 hours)
  • Alignment with RANZCP values and commitment to confidentiality
  • Independence from RANZCP employment (current employees are not eligible to apply)
  • Previous experience in committees advisory roles or relevant lived-experience advocacy is welcome but not required
