The Ecosystems and Threatened Species team within the Conservation Programs Heritage and Regulation Group (part of the Department of Climate Change Energy the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)) is seeking a Senior Threatened Species Officer to play a key role in delivering science-based conservation outcomes that protect NSWs most threatened species and ecological communities. This is a unique opportunity to influence environmental decisions build strong partnerships and help safeguard biodiversity for future generations.

About the role

As a Senior Threatened Species Officer you will lead the planning and delivery of threatened species and threatened ecological community recovery projects in western NSW. Youll provide and apply expert scientific advice and work closely with communities stakeholders and partner organisations to achieve positive conservation outcomes.

This role offers a level of autonomy within agreed priorities supported by senior leadership and contributes to complex high impact environmental decisions.

What youll be doing

In this role you will:

  • Plan coordinate and deliver threatened species recovery programs aligned with government priorities
  • Provide expert advice on threatened species conservation legislation and policy
  • Contribute specialist input to environmental impact assessments including avoidance mitigation and offsetting measures
  • Manage and maintain corporate databases relating to species distribution ecology threats and management
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with internal teams external stakeholders and community groups
  • Deliver community engagement and education initiatives to support biodiversity conservation
  • Provide guidance training and leadership to stakeholders to ensure consistent interpretation of policies and legislative requirements

What were looking for

Were looking for a passionate credible and collaborative conservation professional who brings:

  • Demonstrated experience in threatened species conservation and recovery
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex scientific and legislative matters to diverse audiences
  • Proven ability to influence negotiate and build effective partnerships with a range of stakeholders
  • Sound judgement and the ability to deliver high quality advice in complex and evolving environments
  • Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork including driving long distances and working in remote locations.

Essential requirements:

  • A science degree or a degree in a relevant natural resource discipline
  • A current Australian drivers licence (4WD experience and training desirable)
