Summary
The Statewide Educational Consultant serves as a subject-matter expert in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students providing training technicalassistance and guidance to schools districts and families across New Mexico. Rather than serving as direct instructional staff the Consultant supports educational teams through classroom observation coaching IEP collaboration evaluation coordination and professional learning to strengthen instructional practices communication access and language development for D/HH students. The Consultant also helps families navigate educational systems and access available resources.
It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
- Serve as a subject-matter expert in D/HH education for students ages 322 applyingspecializedknowledge of language development literacy communication modalities special education law and instructional design.
- Demonstrateexpertisein multimodal teaching approaches prioritizing each students individual communication and language needs across educational settings.
- Support educational teams through classroom observation data-informed feedback instructional coaching and written recommendations to enhance communication access language development and instructional practices for D/HH students.
- Collaborate with school-based teams and Outreach multidisciplinary staff including Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) Educational Interpreters and ASL Mentors to support coordinated and comprehensive services.
- Participate in IEP meetings providing guidance instructional recommendations and developingCommunication Consideration Addendumsor related documentation asappropriate.
- Coordinate student evaluation services with families school teams and NMSD to support informed educational planning.
- Provide student-specific and program-level consultation to assigned Local Education Agencies (LEAs).
- Support families in navigating educational systems understanding special education processes and accessing NMSD and community-based resources.
- Design plan andfacilitateprofessional learning opportunities including statewide trainings workshops and conferences for educators families and students; some activities mayoccur inevenings or weekends.
- Maintain professional collaborative relationships with schoolpersonnel families and NMSD colleagues while modeling best practices in communication and teamwork.
- Maintain a valid New Mexico drivers license and the ability to travel statewide including overnight travel asrequired.
