Ecole McTavish High School is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our instructional team in the role of School Counsellor
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Education
- Registered Clinical or Educational Psychologist (RPsych LP LCPC Ed Psych.
- Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) who specializes in mental health Nursing or Occupational Therapist who can help with mental health challenges.
- Social Worker (BSW RSW RCSW MSW)
- Minimum of Bachelor of Psychology Social Work or Counselling with advanced practice in the assessment and treatment of mental emotional and behavioural disorders. *** Master of Psychology Social Work or Counselling (or a significant completion of this program) is an asset.
- Demonstrated preparation in supporting adolescent mental health and social emotional development.
- Eligibility for Alberta teacher certification.
- Demonstrated understanding of the Teaching Quality Standard (TQS) and inclusive education practices.
Desired Qualifications/Skills: - Experience working with secondary-aged students in a school-based setting.
- Training in trauma-informed practice anxiety intervention or strength-based approaches to student support.
- Experience facilitating small-group mental wellness or SEL programs.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills when working with staff families and community partners.
- Knowledge of provincial expectations related to student well-being and inclusive learning environments.
Key Responsibilities - Provide individual and small-group counselling focused on social emotional skill development (e.g. emotional regulation anxiety management peer relationships and resilience).
- Design and implement developmentally appropriate SEL programming aligned with school and Division priorities.
- Collaborate with teachers to embed social emotional learning strategies into classroom practice.
- Support staff through consultation and professional learning related to student mental health and SEL instructional strategies.
- Deliver preventative strength-based interventions consistent with comprehensive school health and inclusive education frameworks.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate caseload documentation in accordance with provincial and Division policies.
- Facilitate referrals and collaborate with community agencies to support students and families requiring additional services.
- Contribute to a positive inclusive and safe school culture through proactive student support practices.
