The Position:

Reporting to the Manager of the Health Centre and the Lead Nurse the School Nurse is responsible for supporting the physical and mental health of students. This role involves providing direct nursing care including assessing students administering medication maintaining current medical documentation and referring students for services. The work of health promotion with students is also a part of thisrole.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Providenursing services at the Health Centre and on-campus (both Upper and JuniorSchools) per the practices outlined by the College of Nurses.
  • Interested ina minimum of 4 shifts per month.
  • Assess students physical social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic nurse-student relationships grounded in respect dignity professional boundaries and culturally responsive trauma-informed care.
  • Refer toappropriate medical/support services when necessary (School Physician SocialWork Emergency Services) and provide treatment and follow-up care whererequired.
  • Communicatewith faculty parents and students through conversation and the distribution of written information within the limits of professional confidentiality.
  • Work withfamilies of students with prevalent or serious medical conditions to ensure asafe school environment and school care plans.
  • Actively partner with the Manager of the Health Centre and report problems or concerns to them.
  • Identify mitigate and report potential risks to student health and safety and participate in quality improvement initiatives and emergency preparedness planning.
  • Arrangeappropriate transportation to medical appointments for boarding students; accompany students to outside support services when required (e.g. hospital).
  • Maintain accurate timely confidential and comprehensive documentation in Havergals electronic medical records system in accordance with CNOs Documentation Standard and applicable privacy legislation.
  • Liaise withthe Public Health Department to maintain accurate immunization records forBoarding Students.
  • Administer immunizations as required and promote influenza vaccine clinics.
  • Assist with TPH middle school immunization clinics.
  • Conductmonthly first-aid kit EpiPen and safety equipment checks at the Health Centre and around campus to ensure the kits and equipmentare stocked and functional.
  • Assessinventory in the Health Centre.
  • Ensurestudents and families are adhering to the concussion protocol. Provide trackingforms email and phone calls for updates and follow up with the appropriate staff on a need-to-know basis.
  • Remain up to date on healthcare issues through seminars workshops and readings.
  • Promotehealthy lifestyles and prevention through bulletin boards health teaching andage-appropriate presentations for students JK- grade 12.
  • Otherresponsibilities as needed.

Qualifications Knowledgeand Experience

  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally safe and inclusive nursing practice.
  • Maintain CPRand AED competency in accordance withHavergal Policy.
  • Goodknowledge of Google to learning new in-house database and record system.
  • Excellentverbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of 2years of Pediatric Nursing experience required.
  • Primary care emergency or pediatric clinical experience is an asset.
  • Ability tomanage working in a fast-paced environment.
