Job Summary

Job Title: Orchestra Director

Dept./School: Assigned Campus

Reports to: Principal/Fine Arts Director
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Pay Grade: Teacher Pay

SALARY RANGE: Teacher Salary plus stipend
Duty Days: 187 days per year


PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provides orchestra instruction and encourages students to develop the skill and ability to excel in the orchestra instrument assigned; responsible for contributing to the educational program as a whole and to the growth of each student; provides opportunities for students to participate in a high-level challenging curriculum in the areas of responsibility

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:
Masters Degree preferred; Bachelors Degree required
Music Degree (Instrumental/Orchestra Emphasis) required
Teacher Certification (Instrumental/Orchestra Emphasis) EC-12 required

Special Knowledge/Skills:
General knowledge of teaching techniques and procedures


Additional Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental orchestra music program
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of state TMEA and UIL policies governing orchestra
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Strong communication public relations and interpersonal skills

Experience:
At least five years of successful orchestra teaching experience and orchestra program administration preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Establishes performance criteria for competition and evaluates students musical abilities initially and on a regular basis.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student musical group involved.
  • Manages and supervises orchestra activities contests and practice sessions that promote individual growth in musical skills teamwork and appropriate concert/performance etiquette.
  • Keeps informed of and ensures compliance with all DISD/UIL/TMEA rules and guidelines.
  • Recruits and retains student membership in the orchestra program as well as monitors and enforces student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Assists in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Works with Fine Arts Office in scheduling competitions and coordinating arrangements.
  • Cooperates with other members of the school staff in planning and implementing instructional goals and objectives for the overall educational development of student performances.
  • Compiles maintains and files all reports records instrument inventory and additional required data using Charms music management system and other required documents.
  • Complies with policies established by federal and state laws State Board of Education rules and the local board policy in area of music.
  • Travels with orchestra students and supervises groups during orchestra competitions in assigned events.
  • Maintains proper and appropriate discipline among students during orchestra contests practice sessions and while on trips off school property.
  • Encourages by example and through instruction sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of orchestra participation.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with student musicians and their parents.
  • Articulates the districts mission and goals in the area of orchestra to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrates awareness of district-community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Demonstrates the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
  • Develops professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
  • Assesses and responds to needs related to job responsibilities.
  • Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the teaching program and implements changes based on the findings.
  • Follows all the rules regulations and policies of Denton ISD and follows directives from superiors.
  • Follows attendance policy as assigned by Supervisor including after school/weekend rehearsals/sectionals.
  • Teaches fifth grade students from feeder pattern an introduction to strings class one class period per day.
  • Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interprets policy procedures and data; coordinates district functions; maintains emotional control under stress

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent standing stooping bending kneeling pushing and pulling; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions

APPOINTMENT: The appointment of this position will be recommended to the Board of Trustees by the Superintendent of Schools on the basis of the applicants training experience and expertise. The Board of Trustees must give final approval.
