Job Summary

Milner Librarys Digitization Center is hiring an extra help Accessibility Assistant. The Digitization Center creates digital images of cultural heritage materials held in university collections processes them and makes them available to researchers through the librarys online platforms. The Accessibility Assistant will be responsible for remediating documents and applying alt-text to images to ensure digital accessibility compliant with mandated standards as well as administering the Centers account on a crowdsource platform for transcription of handwritten materials.

This is a temporary extra help position for Spring/Summer 2026. Applicants must be available to work 20 hours per week. Hours are flexible. This position is not eligible for remote work.

Job Duties
Complete provided training on digital accessibility standards and tools
Remediate documents to meet accessibility standards using Adobe Acrobat ABBYY FineReader and other tools
Develop and apply alternative text to images in digital collections
Apply metadata to files and upload them to online platforms
Administer online crowdsource platform for generating manual transcripts of handwritten documents
Name and store files to a secure network according to strict conventions
May process images in Adobe Photoshop as needed

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$20.00 per hour

Required Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Familiarity with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1 AA
3. Experience creating and editing accessibility tags in PDF documents
4. Experience using Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
5. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
6. Ability to read handwritten cursive documents
7. Good oral and written communication skills
8. Good time management skills

Preferred Qualifications

1. Coursework in library and information science
2. Coursework in 19th and 20th century American history
3. Experience working in GLAMRs (galleries libraries archives museums or record centers)
4. Experience working in a fast-paced production-oriented and security-conscious environment

Work Hours

Varies. Up to 28 hours per week.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods.
2. Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
