Description of Work

Reporting to the Associate Warden of Operations at a multi custody male correctional facility this position is responsible for the supervision of subordinate staff. Other responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

the operations of an institutional housing unit within a multi-custody correctional facility which may include controlled or restrictive housing medical and/or mental health units.

staff determining and evaluating program design necessary to meet the needs of the offender population and coordinating the programs and services with programs and custody staff.

out the programmatic/operational orientation of offender which includes education mental health administrative and disciplinary segregation and work assignments.

the facility classification committee as needed and providing the final approving authority on unit classification and disciplinary committees.


(Salary Range: $43267 - $75718)

Management Preferences

  • Documented experience with report writing.

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.

This is afull-time position(40 hours per week) withState Benefitswith established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC10. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:

Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND five years of correctional experience three of which must have been at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
