Description

The University of North Alabama Department of Geoscience invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2026. Applicants should have an extremely broad background in sustainability with the ability to successfully teach both lower- and upper-level courses. We seek an individual with a strong commitment to undergraduate and international teaching.Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Essential Job Duties

The standard teaching workload is three to four courses (twelve credit hours) per semester six to eight courses (twenty-four credit hours) per year which will include introductory and upper-level courses both in-person and online for the departments sustainability program offered through the University of North Alabama-Guizhou University International College of Engineering and Technology in Guiyang China. The successful applicant will be expected to teach at least two months per semester in China. All instruction is provided in English.

Knowledge skills and abilities include excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to teach inspire and mentor students; willingness to teach in-person hybrid and online modalities; ability to be active in research and scholarship especially involving students; ability to recruit students to the departmental majors; ability to use social media to enhance departmental recruitment efforts and the ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate is required in sustainability earth science environmental science natural resource economics geography geology or a related discipline in hand by the time of the appointment (August 2026); ABD status candidates will be accepted provided degree requirements will be met by the time of the appointment; the ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in climate change sustainable energy environmental systems sustainable ecosystems sustainable water resources sustainable food and agriculture sustainable waste management digital earth people/place/culture and cartography and visualization is required; ability to teach at least two months per semester in China is required; current valid passport/visa status that allows travel out of the country multiple times per year beginning at the time of appointment is required; a track record of external grants that have involved and funded students/student research is preferred; and experience with Quality Matters course certification is preferred.
