Job Summary

SYSTRA Canada is part of the SYSTRA group an international consulting and engineering group a world leader in the design of transport infrastructures. SYSTRA Canada is an engineering and consulting firm whose primary focus is to offer transportation solutions whether for passengers or goods: feasibility studies of building a new railway line increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure privatization of a railway.

Context

Within an engineering consulting firm the junior biologist/technician contributes to environmental studies secures regulatory approvals and integrates ecological considerations into development and infrastructure projects. The role combines fieldwork data analysis and the preparation of deliverables under the supervision of senior biologists and engineers.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Fieldwork and Inventories: Plan and conduct field campaigns per protocols; survey wildlife vegetation and habitats (wetlands watercourses sensitive areas); assess water quality; map vegetation; collect GPS/metadata; ensure data quality site safety and accurate records.
  • Analysis Mapping and Data Management: Process field data run basic analyses and produce thematic maps (QGIS/ArcGIS); support habitat classification ecological assessments and preparation of figures and appendices.
  • Environmental Monitoring and Mitigation: Support construction and environmental monitoring; verify controls (sediment wildlife vegetation noise); contribute to avoidance reduction and offset measures; adjust plans based on field conditions.

Profile/Skills

Education : A college or university degree in biology ecology natural sciences or a related field (DEC BSc).
Years of experience : Prior experience (internships or seasonal roles) in biological surveys or environmental monitoring is an asset.
Technical competencies :

  • Proficiency with fish inventory methods and fish habitat assessment.
  • Proficiency with several basic survey methods (ichthyofauna wetlands flora herpetofauna avifauna) and associated field equipment (an asset).
  • Knowledge of Quebec and Canadian environmental regulations as well as methodological guidelines.
  • Experience with geospatial databases and GIS such as ArcGIS and QGIS (an asset).
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills both in French and in English*
