A well-established independent day school in Cheshire is seeking a meticulous and highly organised HR & Payroll Administrator to join its central operations team. This is a key role within a school known for its strong academic tradition excellent staff retention and supportive professional culture.
The school educates pupils from early years through to Sixth Form and employs a large team of teaching and support staff. With continued growth in pupil numbers and curriculum provision the HR and Finance functions are expanding to ensure smooth and compliant operations.
The Role
You will play a central part in the day-to-day management of HR processes and payroll administration ensuring accuracy confidentiality and compliance at all times.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing monthly payroll processes in collaboration with the Finance team
Processing starters leavers and contractual changes
Maintaining accurate staff records and Single Central Record compliance
Supporting safer recruitment checks including DBS and right-to-work documentation
Administering pension schemes (including Teachers Pension and support staff schemes)
Monitoring staff absence and producing HR reports
Supporting appraisal and performance review administration
The school uses an established MIS and payroll system and you will be expected to quickly become confident in managing these platforms.

Payroll & Compliance Focus
Accuracy is central to this role. You will:
Ensure payroll is processed on time and correctly
Liaise with department heads regarding contract variations
Prepare reports for auditors and governors
Maintain up-to-date HR documentation in line with ISI standards
Support recruitment campaigns and onboarding processes
Experience within education payroll or an independent school setting would be advantageous though not essential.
About You
Previous experience in HR and/or payroll administration
Strong attention to detail and high levels of accuracy
Confident handling sensitive information confidentially
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Professional communication skills with staff at all levels
Experience with education sector systems such as iTrent SIMS or similar would be beneficial.
