Role Purpose

Manage Farms (Western Farms; Northern Farms; Seed Farms) in such a way to produce commercial potatoes and seed potatoes at a competitive price and being financially viable. This includes the management and planning of financial and budgets; crop planning; people; equipment; negotiations for fields; all inputs; safety.

Manage Western Farms (>500ha) in such a way that it produces at a competitive price A-grade processing potatoes that can be stored for up to 5 months.

Ensure budgets and farm management records are correct in place and in time.

Create a team work environment in which staff are well trained and can do their job in a safe and efficient way and take responsibility in their job.

Manage McCain Seed farm (250 350ha) in such a way that it produces at a competitive price the most plantable hectares potatoes of certified quality. Aim is to produce up to 40% of the total seed demand for McCain ware production. Ensure budgets and farm management records are up to date and accurate.

Create a team work environment in which staff are well trained and can do their job in a safe and efficient way and take responsibility in their job.

Manage Northern Farms (400ha) in such a way that it produces at a competitive price A-grade processing potatoes that can be stored for up to 5 months.

Ensure budgets and farm management records are correct in place and in time.

Role KPIs:


1. Compile annual farm budget and financial management
Compile and submit annual budgets for all McCain own farms to Agriculture Financial head.
Evaluate monthly forecasting on actuals vs budget.
Manage the financial margins and inform Finance Agriculture Manager of any deviations.

2. Crop production planning
Manage crop production plan to maintain crop production against budget parameters.
Ensure volume compliance per crop are within the set guidelines.
Plan and implement crop production plan in conjunction with RMI and seed store according to field vs variety vs storage vs RMI demand.
Align the crop production plan with RMI intake demand.

3. Improve yield & quality and reduce input cost through innovation and products
Implement innovative ways of working to ensure improvement and optimization in all aspects of the business.

4. Update Farm Report Field Cost Report and Maintenance Records
Weekly reporting of accurate relevant information to relevant stakeholders.
Review and optimize reporting to ensure strategic benefit.

5. Oversee farm machinery maintenance and utilization
Arrange the maintenance and repair of farm machinery where needed.
Ensure no down time due to poor maintenance and performance.
Plan in advance to import from abroad strategic spare parts for specialized equipment.
Adhere to budget.
Do 5 year CAPEX demand plan.

6. Create a fertilizer and pesticide plan per crop and per field
Negotiate best prices for right fertilizer and agricultural chemical needs.
Maintain and monitor the potato yield and quality.
Assess the fertilizer and pesticide plan to ensure A-Grade potatoes are supplied to the factory.

7. Negotiate prices with input suppliers
Procurement of crop production input with focus on fertilizer and chemicals.
Control budget spent.
Obtain quotes from different suppliers and arrange payment dates delivery dates and all other logistics that involve the deliveries on farms.
Apply market trends and prices in potato industry to align this process.

8. Negotiate and sign lease agreements for potato production
Maintain good relations with farmers to ensure signed lease agreements to rent fields for potato production.
Liaise with Fasken attorneys on long lease contract agreements.
Identify the risk of water stress on potatoes.
Evaluate the reliability of the irrigation infrastructure.
Recommend 4 years or longer lease agreement with farmers.

9. People management
Ensure effective allocation and performance of work activities.
Provide development and leadership support to direct reports in order to achieve departmental and employee objectives.
Develop a culture which promotes teamwork and accountability helping the company to achieve performance excellence.

10. Safety management
Ensure key elements of safety is met year-on-year.
Ensure all Good catches being recorded.
Maintain BOS score as per the agreed level.
Manage health and safety standards across the farming operations.
Ensure farm activities comply with government legislation.

Job Holder Requirements:


Education:Agriculture Degree

Experience:
More than 8 years farm management experience.
Potato and grains growing experience preferred.
Mechanical skills and Farm Machinery Operating experience.
Financial management.
Experience in crop nutrition.
Experience in crop health.
Experience in regenerative agricultural practices.
People management.
Computer literate (MS Office)- Advanced Excel
Experience/knowledge in and the management of health and safety requirements.
Equipment planning utilization and optimization.
