Job Summary



Manager of Horticulture and Grounds
This position is responsible for efficiently and effectively overseeing the day-to-day horticultural operations and careof the Fricks arboretum campus leading the Grounds team and collaborating with other departments on public education and engagement.

Hours: 35 hours per week varying days with occasional evening and weekend work required
Reports to: Director of Operations
Full-time exempt with benefits

Salary: $57072 - $63414 based on experience.

Responsibilities:
Horticultural Leadership: 75%
  • Ensures that The Frick Pittsburgh conforms to the highest standards of garden management practices
  • Work with the Executive Director Director of Operations and others to develop and evolve the grounds and gardens of the museum campus
  • Allocate staff resources and oversee work of Grounds staff and others in assigned areas including weeding mulching mowing plant trimming and leaf cleanup
  • Lead planting pruning and integrated pest management of trees shrubs and annual and perennial plant collections at a high technical level
  • Steward the Fricks status as a Level 1 arboretum
  • Develop and maintain the grounds and Greenhouse maintenance schedule
  • Support teamwork mutual respect active engagement and cooperation among assigned team
  • With the Director of Operations develop and maintain the annual grounds budget
  • Maintain and properly and safely use grounds and gardening equipment and vehicles and instruct the Grounds team in the same
  • Maintain equipment preventative maintenance logs.
  • Conduct pest and disease scouting monitoring and treatments and oversee other plant health practices
  • Oversee the safe application of pesticides and soil amendments and maintain associated records and certifications.
  • Propose and participate in the development of environmentally sustainable initiatives
  • Ensure all records and plant labels are inventoried and accurate.
  • Coordinate all grounds-related service and maintenance contracts
  • Maintain orders for necessary supplies and materials
  • Steward the Fricks partnership with Grow Pittsburgh
  • Participate in ongoing learning and professional development opportunities
  • Represent the Frick at professional workshops and conferences

Public Education and Installations: 20%
  • In collaboration with the Curatorial and Learning departments oversee garden design plant selection and long-term planning to leverage the vision and intent for each assigned garden space
  • Serve as liaison to the Learning department to ensure horticultural care plant selection garden design and project schedules align with the Learning departments programmatic needs and use of garden spaces
  • Assist with staff trainings related to horticulture and grounds
  • Assist in arboretum education and communication priorities by occasionally providing tours contributing to arboretum publications and marketing initiatives assisting with educational
programing and interacting with visitors
  • Collaborate with the Curatorial department on the annual December holiday installation
  • Collaborate with the Curatorial department on occasional Greenhouse art installations
  • Collaborate with the Advancement department on horticulture/grounds-related fundraising efforts

Additional Operational Support: 5%
  • Supervise and perform snow removal operations including hand shoveling and equipment operation
  • Serve as an essential employee for weather related response and site closures
  • Other related job duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in horticulture or related field and two years of experience or equivalent six years combination of education and/or practical experience in horticulture and landscape design
  • Experience supporting educational programing through horticulture
  • Experience working collaboratively and leading a team towards a common goal.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive workplace culture
  • Proficiency with basic computer functions and applications including Teams and Microsoft Office (Excel Word Outlook MaintainX project management system)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with both visitors and staff
  • Ability to perform physical labor occasionally lifting objects of 50 pounds
  • Knowledge of pesticides and adherence to applicable regulations
  • Some knowledge of small engine and equipment repair
  • Clearance of a criminal background check
  • Must have and maintain a valid PA drivers license
  • Within one year of employment must earn and maintain ISA Certified Arborist credential
  • Within one year of employment must possess and maintain a Pennsylvania Pesticide License


Preferred Qualification
  • Ability to operate equipment related to grounds management functions including front-end loaders tractors and pickup truck mounted snow plows leaf blowers riding and push mowers string trimmers salt/sand spreaders snow blowers and dump trucks
