Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise direct and evaluate the work of Youth Counselor/Teacher and Senior Youth Counselor/Teacher subordinates and be considered within client/staff ratio as needed.
- Interview and select applicants for Youth Counselor/Teacher positions in collaboration with immediate supervisor.
- Ensure that group schedule and program activities are appropriate and reflect both educational and therapeutic content and are accomplished in a productive manner that instills a sense of accomplishment within each individual.
- Contribute to the educational development of clients; Duties include but not limited to teaching elective courses tutoring instructing or lecturing to impart knowledge on variety of subjects and activities at program.
- Serve as a co-teacher while youth attend the on-site school each day. Monitor youth behavior and ensure environment is conducive to learning.
- Submit elective course assessments as scheduled on all individuals ensuring documents and communication is shared with the Education Administrator/Coordinator.
- Assist in the maintenance of a therapeutic working relationship between the direct care staff and education staff.
- Coordinate and oversee ongoing Youth Counselor/Teacher training plan. Ensure documentation and training files are properly maintained.
- Supervise the development of and the implementation of chores and sanitation procedures.
- Supervise the periodic client clothing inventory and arrange for the clothing needs to be met either by the client families or Eckerd program.
- Conduct safety checks to ensure safe surroundings for youth and staff at the program at frequency defined by Leadership Team.
- Inspect and inventory program equipment and materials at a designated time frame and arrange for its repair or replacement as indicated to ensure its serviceability.
- Supervise therapeutic outings (day extended) and ensure planning and preparation.
- Ensure timely accurate and complete documentation of all incidents and restraint events.
- May oversee in the self-administration of medications required by youth in care pursuant to Eckerd policy on Medication Administration.
Qualifications
- Masters degree from an accredited College or University in a social or human service field or a Bachelors degree from an accredited College or University in a social or human service field with 2 years experience working with youth is required. One year of supervisory experience is required.
- Must be 21 years of age or older for per DJJ guidelines. Experience with an at-risk youth population and one year of supervisory experience is required.
- Must be able to meet requirements for Eckerds Auto Insurance and be able to drive for business purposes. Valid and appropriate drivers license or state identification is required.
- Ability to travel about property through wilderness terrain. Must be able to pass evaluation of crisis intervention/physical restraint techniques and written certification exam and use approved techniques as needed. Must be able to participate in aquatic activities. Ability to stand sit or walk for extended periods of time. Constant exposure to outdoors and/or weather conditions.
- Required to pass a drug screen in compliance with our Substance Abuse and Drug-Free Workplace policy.

About our Residential Academy:
Eckerd Connects Short-Term Juvenile Justice Residential program is a complete rehabilitative experience delivered in 4 to 6 months to 40 adjudicated male youth ages 13 to 17 referred by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Division of Juvenile Justice. This residential treatment concept combines promising and evidence-based practices with a strong family transition component and signifies a public-private partnership with the Division of Juvenile Justice which has produced an innovative shift in the way youth are served in North Carolinas juvenile justice system. Intensive short-term services include individualized treatment and academic plans that combine formal and experiential education community service behavioral health and family counseling in a non-punitive environment designed to address the youths behavioral challenges through a strength-based approach. Youth also receive accredited education on-site and work together in small group settings with assigned counselors.
