Context
Affiliated with an engineering consulting firm the Wetlands and Vegetation Expert leads the technical and strategic components related to the characterization protection and enhancement of terrestrial and wetland ecosystems. They ensure scientific excellence regulatory compliance and the integration of ecological considerations into infrastructure and landuse projects from feasibility and preliminary design through construction and postwork monitoring.
Missions/Main Duties
- Technical leadership and scientific quality: Define inventory and characterization methods for wetlands and vegetation oversee field campaigns and validate analyses and mapping outputs. Exercise methodological judgment and arbitrate technical choices when field conditions require adaptations.
- Advanced studies analysis and mapping: Lead and conduct wetland delineation and classification studies floristic inventories ecological function assessments and habitat diagnostics. Produce thematic maps and habitat models using GIS and remote sensing and synthesize findings into clear robust deliverables.
- Regulatory strategy and permitting: Advise clients on applicable regulations and develop permitting strategies. Participate in engagements with authorities prepare responses to requests for information and secure project acceptability.
- Ecological design and mitigation/compensation: Recommend avoidance and alignment optimization solutions design contextappropriate mitigation measures and develop compensation and restoration plans (species selection revegetation techniques performance monitoring). Define success indicators and monitoring protocols.
- Project management and interdisciplinary coordination: Plan budgets schedules and resourcing for diverse mandates and coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely compliant and highquality outcomes.
Profile/Skills
Education : Bachelors degree in Biology Ecology Natural Sciences or a related discipline (BSc). A Masters degree is an asset.
Years of experience : A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in wetlands science vegetation ecology and environmental consulting.
Technical competencies :
Mastery of wetland delineation techniques and ecological function assessment.
Mastery of floristic inventory methods with strong knowledge of species of concern native species and exotic/invasive species.
Proficiency with GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS) photointerpretation and integration of LiDAR/remote sensing data.
Ability to structure and analyze complex datasets and to produce highlevel technical reports in both French and English.
Knowledge of regulatory frameworks applicable to wetlands and species of concern as well as recognized guidelines and methods in Quebec with the ability to translate requirements into practical strategies for diverse projects.
