Job Summary

HMS VICTORY is the Royal Navys oldest and most famous warship. She has a dual role as the Flagship to the First Sea Lord and as a living museum to the Georgian Navy. She is best known for her role as Lord Nelsons Flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. She is situated in a Tier 1 public arena in His Majestys Naval Base Portsmouth and is one of the countries most loved visitor attractions.

The Officer of the Day plays a pivotal role in her presentation safety and security to an audience of 400000 visitors per year. This includes the general public MOD Civil Service Tri Service Foreign and Commonwealth dignitaries VIP and VVIP guests.

The Officer of the Day HMS VICTORY is the Commanding Officers representative during his absence. The OOD is responsible for the safety and security of all personnel entering the ship the delivery of all safety instructions whilst monitoring the conduct of the Quartermaster and Boatswains Mate. The OOD is to ensure all daily routines are in place in accordance with daily orders and all ceremonial requirements are identified and personnel briefed and positioned. The OOD is the first point of contact for accidents and emergency procedures and is to follow all laid down guidance liaise with emergency services NMRN and BAE systems emergency response team.

HMS VICTORY presents a unique opportunity which is not encountered in any operational platform; therefore you will need to be a critical thinker with a flexible approach. This position requires you to work as a member of a motivated valued and respected team. The post holder will be accountable to the Commanding Officer for their Primary Purpose and the Executive Officer for their secondary purpose.

PURPOSES

Primary Purpose.

To be responsible to the Commanding Officer for the safe and efficient running of the ships routine together with all ceremonial aspects.

Secondary Purpose.

To be responsible for the day to day liaison and coordination of any maintenance or events with the National Museum of the Royal Navy Duty Manager.

ACCOUNTABILITY

The post holder will be accountable to the Commanding Officer via the Executive Officer for their Primary Purpose.

AUTHORITY

The Officer of the Day will hold functional authority over all visitors guests andpersonnel attending the ship for private official or social functions.

TASKS

The post holder is to carry out the following tasks:

  • To ensure the appropriate appearance of the ship both internally and externally.
  • Conduct periodic rounds (IAW rounds log) to maintain an awareness of security and health and safety issues onboard.
  • To act as point of contact for telephone or face to face enquiries delegating internal action as appropriate.
  • To act as incident manager in the event of any ships emergency in liaison with the NMRN Duty Manager.
  • To supervise the Gangway Staff in liaison with the Whole Ship Coordinator (WSC)
  • To ensure all personnel entering the ship can move safely in conjunction with the NMRN Duty Manager and on duty tour/safety guides.
  • To conduct all ceremonial requirements as required by the Flag Ship of 1SL.
  • To have an in depth and detailed knowledge of HMS VICTORY her history and Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson in order to answer questions if asked by members of the public or visiting guests.
  • To conduct guided tours prior to official functions in the Senior Rates Mess and as directed by the Executive Officer.
  • To conduct tours of HMS VICTORY for visiting Flag Officers their guests and other VIP tours as directed by the Executive Officer.
  • To act as the host in the Senior Rates Mess to all visiting pre booked tour parties who have an offer of hospitality.
  • To act as duty bar person for all official functions in the Senior Rates Mess and the Lower Gun Deck as directed by the WSC (iaw a separate roster)

The OOD may leave HMS VICTORY/Arena to visit South Office Block and utilise the facilities to wash and change as appropriate at the following times during the execution of his/her duty.

  • Am: Prior to 0730
  • PM: On completion of OOD Clean Sweep Rounds but before any evening functions.
  • When visiting South Office Block the OOD is to take a hand held radio. At all other times the OOD is to remain on board HMS VICTORY or be within the Port/Stbd arena.

ESTABLISHMENT DUTIES

The post holder will carry out the following duties:

  • A watchkeeping system along with 4 others beginning with 5 periods of 48 hours the first 4 periods are followed by 6 days off.
  • After the 5th period of duty 16 days off are granted. This roster runs continually throughout the year.
  • The Officer of the Day has heads bathrooms and changing facilities ashore in South Office Block overnight accommodation is in the Senior Rates Mess onboard HMS VICTORY.
