Job Description:
A Senior Quality Engineer in a fabrication plant isresponsible for leading quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) activities to ensure fabricated metal products welding and assemblies meet client specifications industry standards (e.g. ASME API AWS) and ISO 9001 standards. This role requires hands-on shop floor inspection managing non-conformances conducting audits and reducing rework/scrap.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspection & Testing:Perform and manage incoming raw material inspections in-process welding/fit-up inspections and final assembly inspections.
- Welding & Technical Compliance:Review and ensure compliance with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ).
- Documentation & QAP:Prepare maintain and review Quality Assurance Plans (QAP) Inspection and Test Plans (ITP) and material test certificates.
- NCR & CAPA Management:Identify document and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) and drive Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) with the production team.
- NDT Coordination:Oversee Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) activities including Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT) Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Radiographic Testing (RT).
- Client & Third-Party Liaison:Coordinate with customers and Third-Party Inspection (TPI) agencies for inspections and audits.
- Root Cause Analysis:Lead troubleshooting and problem-solving to resolve quality issues aiming for Zero Defects and First Time Right (FTR).
- Mentorship:Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians on inspection techniques and quality standards.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education:Bachelors degree in Mechanical/Production Engineering or a Diploma with relevant experience.
- Experience:57 years of experience in heavy fabrication structural fabrication or metal fabrication industries.
- Certifications:NDT Level II certification (RT UT MT PT) is highly preferred.
- Technical Knowledge:Strong understanding of welding processes reading blueprints/drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Standards:Proficiency in ISO 9001 ASME and AWS standards.
- Soft Skills:Strong analytical communication and leadership skills to work independently and manage cross-functional teams.
- Software:Proficiency in MS Office and ERP systems (e.g. SAP).
Physical/Other Requirements
- Willingness to spend significant time on the shop floor.
- Ability to travel to supplier locations if necessary.
