General Description / Primary Purpose:
The Assistant Director Eco Adventure under the direction of an Associate Director or above plays an integral role in the design development implementation and interpretation of departmental processes and/or programs.
Job Function:
The Assistant Director oversees the administration operations and evaluation of Eco Adventure within Recreation and Wellness managing seven program areas: Osprey Challenge Course & Sky Park Gear Checkout & Programs Environmental Education Eco Camp Student Adventure Trips & Expeditions Nature Trail System and Osprey Cliff (indoor climbing wall).
General Operations
Collect and analyze usage data for reporting.
Ensure compliance for programs involving minors and maintain required certifications for managing a comprehensive outdoor adventure program.
Collaborate with other universities on outdoor recreation best practices.
Oversee risk management and policy compliance for challenge courses and youth programs at Eco Adventure.
Work with RecWell Business Office to manage budgets and revenue goals across A&S auxiliary and foundation accounts; update repair/replacement plans.
Support fundraising efforts with Development Office.
Facility Management
Assess and report facility conditions; forecast needs for strategic planning.
Coordinate inspections permits and accreditation with campus departments.
Advise on planning for renovations and new construction projects.
Supervision & Leadership
Directly supervise two full-time coordinators.
Hire train and oversee part-time student staff for Environmental Education and Eco Camp.
Serve as Camp Director for Eco Camp.
Program Oversight
Challenge Course & Sky Park: Ensure compliance with Alpine Towers and ACCT standards; support the direct-report coordinator and staff.
Gear Checkout & Programs: Oversee inventory program stats and campus events. Support the direct-report coordinator and staff.
Environmental Education & Pavilion Programs: Oversee the development of curriculum aligned with state standards; manage rentals and educational programs. Support the direct-report coordinator and staff.
Eco Camp: Lead planning staffing and operations for summer camp.
Trips & Expeditions: Oversee trip planning budgeting safety and logistics; accompany trips as needed. Support the direct-report coordinator.
Nature Trails: Oversee maintenance of trails and signage; conduct inspections for safety and upkeep.
Osprey Cliff: Oversee indoor climbing wall operations and safety supporting the direct-report coordinator and staff.
Marginal Functions:
Travel to professional conferences.
Maintain professional certifications.
Assist with operations in other areas as needed.
Supervision Exercised:
Supervises and provides leadership to these full-time staff: Coordinator Osprey Challenge Park and Program Coordinator Outdoor Adventures and Environmental Education.
Supervises part-time program assistant with the Environmental Ed and Eco Camp programs.
Oversight of all OPS/Student staff at Eco Adventure with direct supervision of Environmental Ed and Eco Camp staff.
Supervision Received:
Operates independently and reports directly to the Senior Director.
Required Qualifications
Masters and 2 years of relevant experience or Bachelors degree and 4 years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219.Statement(s) of Understanding
