Job Summary

Grand Valley State University Athletic and Recreation Facilities Management seeks an Athletic and Recreation Facility Assistant (1 position) for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is typically a two-year position renewed annually based on successful evaluation after the first year of employment.

Salary and Benefits

$14000 for a 12-month appointment and full tuition waiver and a parking pass.

Primary Duties

  • Assist in managing and supervising Facility Attendants Student Office Assistants and Student Building Supervisors at the Recreation Center including hiring training scheduling mentoring and evaluating (approximately 60 part-time student employees).
  • Coordinate and manage all functions of the Recreation Center Welcome Desk Equipment Room including equipment inventory upkeep and replacement first aid supplies and manage the departments Lost and Found procedures.
  • Create and maintain semester staff schedules using Online scheduling software (Humanity) to ensure the entire facility has coverage and assume responsibility for filling in when necessary.
  • Support and enforce policies and expectations to student staff through the Athletic and Recreation Facilities Management Student Staff Accountability Program.
  • Maintain the RecStar incentive program (employee of the month program) and implementation of other student appreciation incentives such as Student Employee Appreciation Week Staff Shout-outs and semester staff celebrations.
  • Manage assigned events and competitions within but not limited to the Recreation Center Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center.
  • Collaborate with other departmental Graduate Assistants & Coordinators to plan execute and maintain the Student Staff Committees (Student Staff Recognition Team Emergency Response Team and Hiring and Training Team.
  • Work with the Facility and Group Coordinator managing the Athletic & Recreation Membership program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Completed bachelors degree from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to problem-solve and adapt to unexpected problems & situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills strong attention to detail and ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Capable of handling multiple projects and strong time management skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Must have or obtain within 30 days American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification.
  • Must have or obtain within 60 days American Red Cross CPR/AED Professional Rescuer and First Aid Instructor Certification.

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in recreation/facility management higher education or sports management preferred.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Nights and weekends are occasionally required. Primary focus are staffing and facility operations within the Recreation Center and Fieldhouse complex.
