The Great Basin Institute in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is recruiting a Visitor Services Assistant to support public inquiries at the LTBMU Supervisors Office (SO) and at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. The Visitor Services Assistant will work in tandem with experienced Forest Service front desk and interpretive staff to support a number of activities such as permit issuance mailroom functions interpretive sales and recreation information dissemination. The position is responsible for fielding visitor concerns comments and questions via telephone and in person and directs visitors to appropriate staff members as required.

The Visitor Services Assistant works primarily from the SO front desk during its public operating hours (Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm).

Essential Job Functions may include the following:

  1. 50% Visitor communication. Provides general information and education to the visiting public such as: hiking camping beaches picnic areas recreations sites popular visitor attractions and more; shares forest regulation and management information with domestic and international recreationists.
  2. 30% Administrative. Issue various permits and direct visitors to interpretive materials; support the Supervisors Office mailroom and front lobby functions including printing copy and other administrative responsibilities. Attend LTBMU staff meetings.
  3. 20% Interpretive sales. Administer interpretive association book sales tasks such as stocking and completing book/gift sales inventory in collaboration with Great Basin Institute staff.

LOCATION

This position works in-person in South Lake Tahoe CA. The city of South Lake Tahoe is the largest metropolitan area within the Lake Tahoe Basin nestled between the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west and the Carson Range to the east. Summers are typically warm and dry while winters are characteristically precipitous and cold. The alpine community sits at an elevation of 6237ft while nearby Lake Tahoe reaches 6224ft. The region is a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers partaking in outdoor recreation activities such as hiking boating and skiing.

WORK SCHEDULE

Employment dates: May 18 - Nov. 13 2026

Work days: Monday - Friday

Hours: 8/day

Temporary Special Assignment employees are eligible to receive holiday pay. The holiday schedule will comply with the project partner holiday schedule unless otherwise specified in their employment offer. TSAs working five (5) eight (8) hour days per workweek will be paid eight (8) hours for all holidays.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

WAGE: $21.64/hr

Qualifications

  2. Education: Preferred degree in public administration management interpretation/education or a related field.
  3. Experience: 0-2 years experience working in a public service position. Experience working with the Forest Service or in public-facing positions in the Tahoe Basin preferred.
  4. Background Check: Successful completion of a criminal background check is required as a condition of employment for this position.
