Resource Nurse
The Resource Nurse provides professional nursing services and coordinates school home and community resources to support the overall health and educational success of students. The nurse adheres to Safe Practice standards and the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act. The Resource Nurse is assigned daily to school buildings based on district needs. Assignments may include morning and afternoon services that provide both medical and academic support to students with severe disabilities including 1:1 support when required.
Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
Work Schedule: M-F school schedule
Salary:$40000-$50000
Qualifications:
- Valid Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse
- Bachelors Degree in Nursing
- Current CPR with AED certification (AHA or ARC)
- Preferred but not required: Experience as an RN in pediatrics community health or a related clinical setting
Essential Functions: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar related or a logical assignment to the position.
District Nursing Services:
- Completes an orientation period to safely manage coverage issues when floated.
- Provide coverage for district school health offices for scheduled days or partial days as needed when sub coverage cannot be arranged (i.e. field trip coverage personal days professional days and meetings).
- Collaborates with district school nurses to establish procedures and performs DPH mandated screening programs for appropriate grade levels to include height weight BMI vision hearing and postural screening as needed.
- Participates as a health team member; shares information regarding childrens special health care needs which may affect learning and growth. Acts as an advocate for the student and family when appropriate.
Building-Based Nursing Service:
- Provide first aid to injured students and staff. Provide everyday care of ill children contacting parents and dismissing them if necessary. Managing students with chronic illnesses to optimize their time on learning.
- Maintains and updates students health records collaborating with the primary School Nurse in a manner consistent with school policy and state laws and regulations.
- Provide medically prescribed interventions including medication administration as directed in the medication plan in accordance with school policy and the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act.
- Evaluates student response to planned interventions and communicates findings to the DESE-certified school nurse for review and IHP revision.
- Documents student health information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA requirements.
- Responds to frequently encountered health issues provides counseling and crisis intervention. Assists in referrals for students and family members.
- Provides health promotion and disease prevention education to students and staff during routine health room visits.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Director of Health Services or Principal as needed to support school operations and student safety.
