You are a full time student looking for a working student position and want to get to know the work of a Composite Design Engineer Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in ZEROe Research & Technology as a working student (d/f/m) with approx. 18 hours a week!

  • Location: Hamburg (Finkenwerder/ ZAL)

Definition working student
Working students are students who are enrolled at a University or some other institution of higher education and who are employed in a reasonably long fixed-term position parallel to their studies. This position must not be confused with an internship or with the possibility of writing a final thesis.
This employment usually takes place directly on the companys premises. A working students main focus remains on their studies which is why during term-time working students are not allowed to work more than 20 hours per week.
Working students therefore usually work near their place of study so as to conveniently combine studying and employment.

Your location: Finkenwerder/The Innovation Hub
You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Experience the special flair of Hamburg in your spare time where vibrant cosmopolitan culture meets nautic legacy.

Are you wondering how you actually get from university to Airbus Your working student position is at the Finkenwerder plant and you can take the ferry from Teufelsbrück to the Airbus ferry terminal and back to the university in the morning and at noon. Alternatively you can take the ferry to Finkenwerder and then ride your bike for about another 15 minutes to the main entrance.

You will be working at the ZAL TechCenter (Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung) in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. The ZAL is one of the most modern research centers for civil aviation worldwide. Here you will work in a dynamic start-up-like environment where Airbus teams collaborate closely with partners to shape the future of flight.

How to get there: Even though you are not directly in the main plant you still enjoy the maritime commute. You can take the ferry from Teufelsbrück/Landungsbrücken to the Finkenwerder ferry terminal. From there the ZAL TechCenter is easily reachable by bike or a short bus ride situated right next to the Airbus production site.

Your benefits

  • Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 18-hour week (flexitime).
  • A final thesis is possible after consultation with the department.
  • Innovative Environment: Work in the ZAL a hub specifically designed for R&D and collaboration.
  • Mobile working after agreement with the department.
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • As an integral part of the ZEROe RnT team you will act as a design engineer who enjoys hands-on work. Instead of just working on theoretical concepts you will accompany the lifecycle of a part from the screen to the test bench. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Design: You will develop and design innovative ideas for CFRP structures contributing to the hydrogen aircraft architecture.
  • 3D Modeling (CAD): You will use 3DEXPERIENCE to create detailed 3D models and assemblies.
  • Structural Analysis (FEM): You will support the pre-sizing of components. Ideally you will perform initial FEM calculations to validate your designs regarding weight and strength.
  • Prototyping & Manufacturing: You will not only design the parts but also help build them. You will work closely with Manufacturing Engineering colleagues in Stade to manufacture and assemble your concepts in the workshop.
  • Collaboration: You will exchange between design stress and the manufacturing shop floor ensuring that what is designed can actually be built.

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Education: Enrolled student in Aerospace Engineering Mechanical Engineering or a comparable technical degree.
  • CAD Skills: Basic to advanced knowledge in 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) / Catia V5 is highly desired. If you are proficient in other CAD tools a strong motivation to learn 3DX quickly is required.
  • Simulation Skills: Basic understanding of FEM (Finite Element Method) and pre-sizing principles is preferred. Motivation to deepen your knowledge in this area is key.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of composite materials (CFRP) and mechanical design principles.
  • Mindset: Hands-on mentality. You enjoy tinkering and building things physically not just designing them digitally.
  • Language: Fluent in English; German is a strong plus (especially for communication in the workshop) but not a must.
