REPORTS TO: DistrictAthletic Director
SUMMARY: The Head Coach directs and manages the assigned athletic program including budget and facilities within the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District. This position leads and directs the athletic program instructing students to develop skills that enhance their full athletic potential. The Head Coach recruits and manages coaches in conjunction with the Athletic Director and provides students with the opportunity to participate in athletic activities and ensure compliance with all federal state MHSAA and local requirements. This position leads the athletic staff in a positive and professional manner which builds character in both staff and students representing the SOCSD athletic department in a manner that builds pride and success for the Jacket community.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organize coordinate and promote a comprehensive athletic program in the assigned sport that is designed to meet the needs and interests of the school community.
- Ensure that adequate supervision is provided for all students involved in the program.
- Provide for the safety of participants by inspecting facilities and equipment and being aware of environmental concerns.
- Provide effective leadership that will ensure a positive learning environment and that stresses the importance of academic achievement.
- Demonstrate a high degree of ethics professionalism human relations and serve as a positive role model for all students.
- Establish and maintain rapport with students and encourages student participation by recruitment procedures.
- Motivate students to achieve their maximum potential.
- Provide guidance and leadership to assistant coaches.
- Prepare successful practice and game plans.
- Maintain documentation of each practice on file for a minimum of three years.
- Maintain compliance with all rules and regulations of the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) and the Starkville School District.
- Prepare and submit an annual budget to the Athletic director in December and follow local school policies involving financial transactions.
- Prepare reports inventory and recommendations for equipment at the end of the season.
- Maintain all equipment for the sport.
- Schedule all games for the season and enter all Dragonfly information prior to the first official practice or tryout.
- Drive or ride the bus to all away games.
- Maintain accurate individual and team performance records and provide the report to the athletic office at the end of each season.
- Maintain student eligibility records.
- Oversee public relations and publicity for assigned athletic sport.
- Create separate Remind accounts for student athletes and parents to communicate procedures.
- Plan organize and implement the teaching of fundamentals strategies rules and proper conditioning of the assigned sport.
- Provide an atmosphere conducive towards good sportsmanship.
- Plan and participate in the awards program(s) according to school procedure.
- Issue collect inventory and store equipment consistent with department guidelines.
- Support all programs sanctioned by MHSAA.
- Report regularly and punctually to assigned work location and notifies supervisor or designee of impending absence in a timely manner.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in education with Mississippi teaching license.
- Knowledge of assigned sport.
- Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport.
- All coaches are required to have a current CDL and successfully complete bus training school which includes driving testing and drug screening.
