Position Summary
Bow Valley College is seeking a compassionate knowledgeable and collaborative professional to join Student Services as a Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Advisor. Reporting to the Associate Director Student Life and Wellness this role is a member of the Mental Health team and serves as the primary point of contact for students impacted by sexual and/or gender-based violence including domestic and intimate partner violence. This position plays a critical role in fostering a safe supportive and informed campus community through direct student support education prevention programming and cross-campus collaboration.
The Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Advisor responds to student concerns that may involve a high degree of complexity or risk. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical assessment skills sound professional judgment and the ability to provide timely crisis intervention treatment planning and case management. Working independently within a dynamic post-secondary environment the Advisor will conduct mental health assessments implement safety planning through risk assessment processes and coordinate referrals to internal and external health justice and community supports. The role also includes advocacy for students navigating formal reporting processes under the Colleges Sexual Violence Policy consultation with the threat assessment team and Student Conduct Officer when required and collaboration with campus partners to coordinate appropriate accommodations.
A key component of this role is the development and coordination of education awareness and prevention initiatives related to sexual and gender-based violence. The Advisor will design and deliver training tailored to the needs of the College community using multi-modal approaches grounded in Universal Design for Learning principles. This includes coordinating Sexual Violence First Responder training supporting peer-led initiatives and leading a comprehensive awareness campaign during Sexual Violence Awareness Month and throughout the partnership with Marketing & Recruitment and other departments the Advisor will develop communication and change management strategies and create collateral materials (e.g. videos print materials online resources) to promote awareness and engagement. The Advisor will also support the implementation of data collection systems and evaluation tools to ensure programs and initiatives are measurable and reportable.
In addition to direct support and programming the Advisor builds and maintains strong relationships with community mental health providers social service agencies and specialized treatment programs to ensure seamless transitions and continuity of care for students. This includes coordinating crisis intervention hospitalizations discharge planning and proactive follow-up to monitor the effectiveness of referrals. The Advisor maintains accurate and timely documentation in compliance with College policies the Protection of Privacy Act (PPA) and the Access to Information Act (ATIA) and contributes to interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement of the mental health triage model within Student Services. The role may also represent the College on relevant internal or external committees and working groups.
The ideal candidate holds a Bachelors degree in Social Work Education Psychology or a related field along with 13 years of directly related experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting individuals impacted by sexual violence developing and facilitating training and awareness initiatives and working within post-secondary environments. Demonstrated experience engaging diverse populations strong communication and presentation skills excellent problem-solving and organizational abilities and a high degree of initiative discretion and professionalism are essential. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other digital tools is required; experience with student information systems is an asset.
