Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

JOB DEFINITION:

Will work with the CN Guidance Youth ACT team to provide that portion of direct patient care which is unique to the psychiatric nurse practitioner profession and which is guided by terms set forth in the Collaborative Practice Agreement between the nurse practitioner and a staff psychiatrist who may also be the medical director. This care is integrated into the total treatment plan for each patient which is developed through a team-oriented approach.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Masters degree in advanced practice nursing from an accredited program. New York State license and registration as a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry. Current DEA registration.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Substantial clinical experience with the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of mental disorders in outpatient and/or inpatient settings. Experience will include management of children with severe emotional disturbance (SED) as well as those with psychiatric and co-occurring substance abuse disorders. Familiarity with current DSM criteria.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides supervision and medication to appropriate patients applying standards of care consistent with good medical judgment and current practice in the psychiatric community. This can include the administration of intramuscular medication when appropriate.
2. Provides psychiatric examination for the purpose of diagnostic evaluation determination of treatment needs and prognostic factors. This includes using all reasonable methods to detect the presence of danger to self or others and collaboration with the treatment team to implement appropriate precautions.
3. Is available for consultation with staff regarding relevant issues in the patient medical background and collaborates with appropriate professionals in the community to integrate agency treatment with overall medical care.
4. Contributes to the timely production of all necessary reports to other agencies concerning patients who they have examined and/or treated.
5. Arranges for appropriate laboratory testing indicated in collaboration with the treating physician and/or conducts any other relevant studies or tests. Implements any follow-up needed.
6. Schedules patient contacts in a manner consistent with the efficient use of time maximizing availability for direct patient contact.
7. Collaborates with other members of the treatment team in providing integrated care. This may include appropriate outreach when indicated.
8. Establishes and maintains appropriate and timely clinical case records including but not limited to treatment plans progress notes and treatment plan reviews documenting appropriate therapeutic intervention with each client to the Agency funding licensing and billing authorities.
9. Facilitate sharing of data with the individuals to whom it applies to facilitate partnered decision-making and to keep clients informed of progress
10. Complete QI Training during onboarding and participate in QI refresher training as needed.
11. Work with the entire CN Guidance team to apply the Plan-Do-Study-ACT continuous quality improvement approach to address systemic organizational challenges
12. Actively engage in agency wide training and work groups as well as NYS specific training on and for the Youth ACT model.
13. Other duties as assigned.
