RoleSummary
Sign Language Interpreter -Interpreters are specially trained individuals who will facilitate communication between students and staff. The interpreters duties are not only specific to the teacher assigned but they also serve as a member of the educational team. This position will work with the teachers who need signlanguage interpreters to assist with instruction but will not perform duties as a licensed teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS
Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
The successful candidate shall have the training skills and ability necessary to:
- Interpret oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English.
- Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately.
- Adhere to the rules of confidentiality required of all school personnel.
- Work collaboratively with theeducational team.
- Prepare for interpreting assignments including the vocabulary and content knowledge of the subject matter.
- Assist in communication throughout the building during instructional periods and student parent meetings.
- Report to building principal.
- Supervision will be in conjunction with the general education teacher(s) and the hearing specialist.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students employees and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands Work Hazards
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS
Salary: $30.81 per hr. - per AFSCME contract
Service Period: School year only - 7 hours daily
