Job Summary

  • Completion of 1st year in a recognized Recreation Administration or related secondary program
  • Minimum of one (1) year directly related experience in leading recreational cultural or related educational programs

Assets:

  • Instructor level certification(s) for canoeing archery and/or cycling
  • National Coaching Certification(s)
  • Experience working with individuals with inclusion needs
  • Familiarity working with volunteers
  • Background in outdoor adventure sports

Skills required for success:

  • Experience training evaluating and supervising staff
  • Ability to work safely outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions as well as in safety-sensitive environments
  • Proficiency to train leaders to lead programs that entertain and educate participants while managing multiple tasks effectively and safely
  • Knowledge of inclusive physical literacy and recreation program objectives policies and procedures
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively engage program leaders participants and guardians as well as collaborate with team members and supervisors
  • Ability to utilize mobile computer tools including Google Suite for documentation and communication
  • A strong ability to work independently and manage time appropriately to meet section goals
  • Capable of the safe handling use and maintenance of program materials and equipment

Conditions of Employment:

  • Start date for this position will begin April 21 up to August 31 2026
  • Available during staff training April 23 - 24 2026 April 27 - May 1 2026 and June 22 - 26 2026.
  • Current Intermediate First Aid and CPR (level C) or equivalent is required prior to commencing employment
  • Applicants will be required to have their own vehicle and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit may be required
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Some evening and weekend work is required

Now is your chance to put your leadership skills to good use providing support and guidance to our programs staff and volunteers!

What will you do

  • Assist with the recruitment interviews and hiring of frontline staff
  • Train frontline staff and Leaders-in-Training (LITs) on program execution and develop and implement relevant training and programs
  • Schedule supervise mentor and evaluate staff
  • Deliver excellent customer service and respond to incoming queries
  • Provide ongoing support leadership and resources to program staff and LITs
  • Monitor schedule and transport supplies and equipment
  • Ensure overall participant and program safety
  • Assist with preparing advertising/marketing materials
  • Provide assistance in the development of new programs
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to the overall operation of the Outdoor Adventure programs (schedules timesheets program reports evaluations statistics etc).
  • Assist with other related duties as required
