Nature of Work

Thefundamental reason this classification exists is perform skilled work in theinstallation and maintenance of electronic traffic signal systems streetlighting systems and fiber optic communication systems. Work requires practical knowledge of theNational Electrical Code (NEC) and involves the application of electrical and electronicknowledge and skills in the field and in the shop. Primary work responsibilities may include:assisting to install traffic control cabinets traffic signals and vehicledetection systems; assisting to repair traffic control cabinets traffic signalsand vehicle detection systems; assisting to perform regular and preventativemaintenance on traffic signal and street lighting systems; performing manualwork; and operating equipment as experience allows. The Traffic Control Technician I isdistinguished from the Traffic Control Technician II in that the Technician Isperform the more entry-level and routine tasks while gaining on-the-jobtraining on more technical tasks and equipment operation. Incumbents mayperform more routine maintenance and repair independently but more difficultwork is performed under the guidance of the Traffic Control Technician II orthe Traffic Control Supervisor. Work istypically performed as a member of a small crew. Supervision is received fromthe Traffic Control Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High Schooldiploma or GED. Three (3) years of experience in commercial/industrial wiringand electrical systems. A two-year degree in Electrical Systems or a closelyrelated field from an accredited technical college may substitute for two (2) yearsof the required experience.

NOTE: Qualifying education training and experience that provide therequisite knowledge skills and abilities to perform the job will beconsidered.

Special Requirements

Must have andmaintain a valid drivers license and insurable driving record. Must have (or obtain within the six-monthprobationary period) a Commercial Drivers License Class B (Airbrakes). Must beon emergency standby duty afterhours on a scheduled rotating basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is performed with exposure to both low- and high-voltage electricaloutputs. Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environmentsincluding but not limited to: at heights up to 100 feet above ground inunkempt areas with tall weeds and exposure to local wildlife and in closeproximity to heavy traffic traveling at speeds exceeding 65 miles per is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to theelements to include extreme heat cold rain and lightning. Work will requiresome overtime night weekend and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-callduty.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to bend stoop crouchsquat kneel and work in restricted and/or confined spaces for extended periodsof time (up to ten hours).Physical ability to lift or carry heavyobjects up to 50 lbs. for a short duration unassisted.Physical ability to work from ladders andbucket (of bucket truck) at heights up to 100 feet for extended periods of time.Physical ability to distinguish between colorsas needed to differentiate between color- coded wires and signal lights inorder to make repairs.

Kind of Examination
