About the Role

The Environmental Department Intern will support environmental compliance reporting and sustainability initiatives across both the aluminum smelter and power plant operations. This internship provides handson experience in environmental management systems regulatory reporting and environmental improvement projects. Depending on the interns degree program tailored project opportunities are available in sustainability geology air emissions water stewardship and biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with the operational processes of an aluminum smelter and power plant including environmental aspects of production.
  • Assist with streamlining data reporting associated with operating reports and environmental performance tracking.
  • Alternative Project Opportunities Based on Degree/Interests
    • Sustainability: Contribute to global environmental metrics processes and database improvements.
    • Geology/Earth Sciences: Support PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) soil investigation efforts including data gathering and field observations.
    • Air Quality: Assist in developing or updating the Air Emissions Management Plan including emissions data review and documentation.
    • Water Resources: Support creation or enhancement of a Water Stewardship Plan including water-use data and risk considerations.
    • Biodiversity: Contribute to the Biodiversity Action Plan focusing on habitat considerations site biodiversity risks and improvement actions.
  • General Responsibilities
    • Participate in environmental data collection analysis and reporting tasks.
    • Work collaboratively with environmental staff operations teams and engineering groups.
    • Support compliance activities through documentation updates and process improvements.

Working Conditions

  • Work occurs in both office and industrial environments including smelter and power plant areas.
  • Exposure to noise heat outdoor conditions and active production environments may occur during fieldwork.
  • May require walking climbing stairs standing for field observations and occasional outdoor sampling or inspections.
  • Standard weekday schedule with flexibility based on project needs.

Environmental Responsibilities

  • Follow all environmental policies procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Support projects aimed at environmental compliance sustainability and resource stewardship.
  • Demonstrate environmentally responsible work habits in both field and office settings.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all site safety policies PPE requirements and environmental health and safety protocols.
  • Participate in hazard identification and safework planning for field activities.
  • Maintain safe behaviors during environmental sampling inspections and data collection tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a degree program related to:
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Environmental Science
    • Environmental Technology
    • Sustainability Engineering
    • Environmental Management
    • Or another field within the broad scope of environmental studies
  • Interest in environmental compliance sustainability or industrial environmental systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to environmental reporting sustainability frameworks or regulatory concepts through coursework or projects.
  • Familiarity with environmental databases field sampling methods or compliance documentation.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problemsolving abilities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to organize and interpret environmental data.
  • Attention to detail in reporting documentation and field observations.
  • Willingness to learn adapt and participate in handson environmental tasks.
