Te kōwhiringa The Opportunity

As a senior specialist within our P&C Advisory function you will play a critical role in delivering professional pragmatic and high-quality people advisory support across the business. With a strong focus on employee relations (ER) you will lead a high-volume portfolio of cases end-to-end and act as a trusted escalation point for managers and fellow P&C Advisors.

Youll work closely with the P&C Operations Manager NZ and ER Lead NZ partnering across the business to ensure our people practices align with Downer policy employment legislation and our commitment to being a trusted and responsible good employer.

This is an 18-month fixed term contract based in Auckland or Porirua Wellington.

What Youll Be Doing:

Employee Relations Leadership

  • Manage complex ER cases end-to-end including disciplinary performance fitness for work and medical declaration matters
  • Lead high-risk or sensitive cases requiring dedicated case management
  • Support investigations personal grievance responses and mediations
  • Identify trends and proactively mitigate risk through early intervention

Senior Advisory & Escalation Support

  • Act as an escalation point for P&C Advisors and managers
  • Provide practical high-quality advice aligned with legislation and business needs
  • Guide leaders through HR processes and systems including Oracle HCM Cloud and Service Now
  • Support day-to-day P&C operations and employment documentation

Systems Compliance & Process Excellence

  • Ensure accurate HR system processing including terminations and data updates
  • Maintain robust documentation and tracking tools
  • Contribute to policy updates and employment compliance activities

Capability & Culture

  • Design and deliver ER-focused training and coaching for leaders
  • Enhance internal training content and promote continuous improvement
  • Lead lessons learned reviews following significant ER matters
  • Role model Downers values Zero Harm principles and a just culture approach

Strategic & Project Support (as required)

  • Partner with P&C Business Partners on union negotiations and organisational change
  • Contribute to national P&C initiatives and continuous improvement projects
  • Provide insights based on case trends and workforce data

Nga pūkenga matua Important Skills

  • Significant experience in a senior HR/P&C advisory role
  • Strong hands-on experience managing end-to-end ER cases (disciplinary performance medical incapacity)
  • Solid knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation and contract interpretation
  • Proven ability to influence challenge constructively and manage conflict
  • Experience working in complex fast-paced environments
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Confidence using MS Office tools; experience with Oracle HCM Cloud and Service Now is advantageous
  • A tertiary qualification in HR (desirable) or equivalent practical experience
